A Turning Point for Taitokerau

Our project defines the moment we are in as the Epistemological Singularity. While the sudden rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is a big part of it, this singularity is actually about something much deeper. It is a massive shift where the old colonial way of running the world is starting to break down, giving us a chance to bring our own ancestral logic and ways of living back to the centre. For nearly two hundred years, the system used in Aotearoa has treated the universe like a dead machine made of separate parts that can just be used for profit. This "Newtonian Error" has created a "Leaky Bucket" economy where our resources, our stories, and our life force (Mauri) are shipped overseas, leaving our communities struggling.

The Woven World

The research from our project shows that reality is actually a "Woven Universe" where everything is connected. This isn’t just a nice idea, it’s a physical fact of how the world works. If we look at science and our own understanding of whanaungatanga, we see that the health of the land and the digital mana of the people cannot be separated. AI is a powerful tool that can either speed up the loss of our cultural meanings or it can be a "Digital Waka," helping us carry our wisdom safely into the future.

A Collective Stirring

There is a quiet, steady feeling growing in the atmosphere here in Taitokerau. It is not something being "run" by any one person or organisation, but rather a movement coming together through the collective intent of our whānau. I believe we are seeing the start of a spiritual revival, one that is less about religious labels and more about getting back to the pure source of life for the wellbeing of our people and our land. As this heart-felt change grows in the North, I believe it will naturally move South, carrying a message of hope to the rest of the country.

Leaving the Leaky Bucket

For too long, we have lived under a system that treats everything as separate, disconnected parts. In our research, we identify this as a "Babylonian" way of operating, which acts like a "Leaky Bucket" for our region. It extracts our energy, our talent, and our resources, and exports them elsewhere, leaving our communities feeling drained. But a collective shift is happening as people begin to choose Te Ōhanga Mauri, an economy that prioritises the binding life force, or Mauri, of all things.

Deep Connection

In our world here in Taitokerau, Whanaungatanga is often talked about as just family ties or social networking. But through the lens of Quantum Whakapapa, we see it as something much deeper: a physical description of how we are stitched into the fabric of the universe. When we say "everything is connected," we are not just being poetic; we are describing what physicists call Quantum Entanglement.

Quantum Kinship

In quantum mechanics, particles that have interacted remain linked, sharing a single "wave function" regardless of the distance between them. A change in one instantly affects the other. This physically validates our worldview that the individual is not an autonomous "island" but a node in a vast, non-local web of whakapapa that extends to the land, the water, and the cosmos. For many neurodivergent people, this connection is not just a theory—it is felt viscerally in every waking moment.

A Leaky Bucket

My heart aches for our beautiful Taitokerau. For too long, we have lived under a system that treats our home like a resource to be stripped rather than a mother to be loved. We see it every day: the log trucks carrying our timber away while our own people live in cold, damp houses and cars. We see our children, our greatest treasure, leaving for the cities because they can’t see a future here. This isn’t just an economic problem; it is a spiritual leak that is draining the very life force, the Mauri, from our land and our people.

The Lie of Separation

We’ve been sold a story that we are all separate, that what happens to my neighbour in Kaikohe doesn't affect me in Whangārei. But our faith and our ancestors tell us a different truth. We live in a "Woven Universe" where every thread is connected. If one part suffers, the whole body suffers. This "lie of separation" has allowed us to accept poverty as normal, but it is actually a breakdown of the sacred bonds of Whanaungatanga.

My parents were both into languages. I remember fairly often as a child when they couldn’t think of an English word to say what they wanted to say, so they’d use a Maori or French or Japanese word. I didn’t think too much of it at the time, i supposed that maybe some concepts just weren’t part of English culture. As it turns out, the form of English used to colonise much of the world, the language of commerce, fails to clearly describe many aspects of reality clearly. This isn't an accident of history; it’s the result of a deliberate "re-engineering" of the English language that happened between 1620 and 1700. 

In the quiet of a Taitokerau morning, before the world wakes up to the noise of the "Babylonian" grind, there is a moment of pure clarity. You can feel the breath of the land—the Mauri—moving through the trees and the mist. In our traditional way of seeing, health isn’t just about the absence of sickness; it is about the state of this breath. Hauora is the "breath of life" shared between us, our tūpuna, and the whenua. When that breath is restricted, we feel it in our bodies, our minds, and our whānau.

For too long, we’ve been told that health is a private matter or a line item in a government budget. This is the "Newtonian Error" at work—treating people like separate parts in a machine. If a part breaks, we try to fix it in isolation, often ignoring the toxic soil it’s planted in. In the Babylonian system, we see health as something to be managed by "experts" in far-off buildings, usually after the damage is already done. This extractive model creates social entropy—a state of disorder where we are lonely, stressed, and disconnected from the very things that give us life.

More Than Just a Warrior

Growing up in Te Tai Tokerau, you hear the names of the great rangatira passed down like heirlooms. But history has a funny way of flattening a man. For my 4-greats grandfather, Pomare I of Ngāti Manu, the history books often get stuck on the image of the "formidable warrior"—all muskets, mana, and battlefield prowess.

But if you sit on the porch long enough and look past the colonial ink, you see a different story. Pomare I wasn't just a fighter; he was a master of Strategic Entanglement. He was the original disrupter who transformed the Bay of Islands into a global trade powerhouse. He was an architect of reality who understood that to keep his people's Rangatiratanga, he had to master the new world's tools without letting them overwrite his internal "source code".

They say the darkest part of the night is just before the dawn, but for a while there, I wasn't sure the sun was ever coming back up.

I’m going to be straight with you: this is the scariest and most vulnerable thing I’ve ever done. I’m opening up about a mental health crisis that took me right to the edge—scarily close to a final exit. I'm talking about a state of total "decoherence," where the weave of my world didn't just fray; it felt like it had completely disintegrated. In our Māori worldview, we might call this a heavy season in Te Kore—the Great Void. But as Reverend Māori Marsden taught us, Te Kore isn't just "nothingness"; it is the realm of raw potentiality.

A different story

A while ago, I was sitting in a workshop with people who work with addiction. I heard stories that did not fit the usual script we are given. We have been told for a hundred years that certain chemicals are like a hook that never lets go. But the data shows something else. Why does one person use a substance and walk away, while another loses everything to it?

The answer is not found in a lab, it is found in the Woven Universe. When a person is cut off from their land, their family, and their purpose, they are living in a state of disorder. This is what we see too often in Taitokerau.

The experiment

There was a famous study called Rat Park. Scientists found that rats kept in a lonely, empty cage would drink drugged water until they died. But rats in a park-with friends, space, and things to do-mostly ignored the drugs. The conclusion was simple: the opposite of addiction is not just staying clean, it is connection.

A shared signal

I was driving out to Mt Manaia with some whānau the other day, just soaking in the views of our beautiful hills. We were listening to a song by Unity Pacific, and it hit me just how much of our story here in Taitokerau is tied to a land thousands of miles away.

Most people see the red, gold, and green flags at Waitangi or during our festivals and think it is just about the music. But if you look deeper, those colours are not just a fashion choice. They are signals of a deep connection, what we might call an invisible thread, that links our struggle for sovereignty here to a global movement.

Prophets and promises

This connection did not start with reggae music in the 1970s. It goes back much further. In the 1800s, our own prophets like Te Kooti and Ratana were reading the Bible through their own eyes. They did not see a story about a foreign people needing "saving" by the British. They saw themselves.

The feeling of being alone

There is a heavy feeling hanging over our towns lately, a kind of quiet isolation that should not exist in a place as connected as the North. We are surrounded by whānau, yet many people feel lonely. This happens because we have been sold a big lie. We have been told that we are solo agents, or "self-made" people who are only responsible for ourselves.

We have been taught to think of ourselves like separate pool balls on a table, clicking against each other but never truly joining. This is a bad explanation of life. It is a way of thinking that makes us sick and disconnects us from the strength of our community.

The mistake of separation

For nearly two hundred years, the systems brought to our shores have focused on the "individual." This way of thinking treats people as separate parts and carves up the land into private blocks. It disconnects the soil from the water and the people from the land.

The theft of the signal

Kia ora e te whānau. Grab a seat here on the porch. Today we need to talk about a very specific kind of theft. It was not just a theft of land or resources, it was a theft of the signal. For generations here in Taitokerau, we have been living with a version of faith that feels a bit "off," like a radio station with too much static.

This happened because, back in the 1800s, the political forces of the British Crown did something very clever and very cruel. They took the message of Ihu (Yeshua’s name in the Paipera Tapu), which is all about connection and love, and they put a colonial mask over it. They used the Cross to hide the Crown’s hunger for power. This was not an accident, it was a deliberate strategy to separate us from everything that makes us strong.

The when and the why

This distortion started long before the ships arrived in Aotearoa. It began in the 15th century with something called the Doctrine of Discovery. These were laws made by powerful leaders in Europe who decided that any land not owned by "Christians" was essentially empty and ready to be taken.

Sitting on the porch

Tēnā koutou, e te iwi. Pull up a chair here on the porch with me. Lately, I have been sitting with a couple of books that might seem like they come from different worlds. One is about the deep secrets of quantum physics, and the other is an old Māori translation of the Gospels.

At first, you might think a scientist and a preacher have nothing to say to each other. But when I look at them through our Ngāpuhi lens, they are telling the same story. They both say that nothing in this world lives by itself. Everything is connected, from the stars in the sky to the mangroves in the Hokianga.

The tickle effect

In the world of science, there is something called entanglement. It sounds fancy, but the idea is simple. It means that when two things are connected at a deep level, they share one life. You could put one part on the moon and keep the other here in Taitokerau.
