THE MAURI MODEL
THE MAURI MODEL - MEASURING LIFE FORCE
Defining Mauri: The Thermodynamic of Life
The Mauri Model is the algorithmic core of the new system, serving as a decision-making framework to assess the "binding energy" or life force of any given activity. It defines Mauri not merely as a mystical concept, but as the thermodynamic capacity to sustain and enhance life, aligning with the concept of Negentropy. In this framework, value is measured by a system’s ability to move from a state of disorder (entropy) to a state of order and vitality.
Origin: From Engineering to Ontology
Developed by respected Māori engineer and researcher Dr. Kepa Morgan, the Mauri Model was created to bridge the gap between indigenous knowledge and technical assessment. It was designed to replace the "Newtonian Error" of standard Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA), which often ignores cultural and environmental "externalities". By using an integer scale from -2 to +2, the model provides the mathematical rigour required to validate spiritual and cultural values within a modern economic context.
Application: The Four Dimensions of Well-being
The model evaluates every project or policy across four critical dimensions to ensure it achieves Mauri Ora (maximum life force):
Te Taiao (Environment): The health and integrity of the natural world.
Te Ahurea (Culture): The protection of identity, knowledge, and Mātauranga.
Te Tangata (Social): The well-being of the community and the strength of whānau.
Te Pūtea (Economic): Financial viability and the generation of circular wealth.
Example: Vetoing the Entropic
A practical example of the model in action is the assessment of raw log exports in Te Tai Tokerau. While this activity may score positively in Te Pūtea (short-term profit), it typically scores a -2 (Mauri Mate) in Te Taiao due to soil nutrient depletion and -2 in Te Tangata due to low-wage poverty. Under the model’s Operational Rule, any project scoring a -2 in any dimension is constitutionally vetoed, preventing the trade-off of environmental or social health for financial gain.
