Who am I and why did I start The Quantum Whakapapa Project?

ABOUT

About the Project: From Spreadsheets to the Heartbeat of the World

I used to spend my days measuring variances in a spreadsheet. Now, I measure the Mauri (life force) of the cosmos.

I’m Dave. For over a decade, my world was defined by numbers. I worked as a Business Performance Analyst and Supply Chain expert for big players like National Foods, Fletcher Building, and Refining NZ. I was skilled at using high-tech systems to squeeze efficiency out of everything from food production to petroleum.

I was trained in the "Clockwork Universe" view, the idea that the world is a machine made of separate parts that just need to be optimised. But while studying accounting as an adult, I realised the numbers didn't add up. These models were "Bad Explanations." They could measure profit, but they were blind to spirit, connection, and vitality.

The Leaky Bucket

I saw firsthand how our economy works like a "Leaky Bucket." We ship the energy of our land offshore and leave the social fabric behind to fray. A spreadsheet can tell you the price of a tree, but it can’t tell you the value of a forest to the people standing in its shade.

The breakthrough came when I realised Western economics is "low-reach." It treats resources as isolated objects. Meanwhile, the cutting edge of Quantum Physics, specifically the idea of Entanglement, proves what our ancestors always knew: we live in a Woven Universe.

The Struggle and the Shift

I moved into the Not-for-Profit sector to use my skills for our people, managing finances and operations for groups like Taimahi Trust and 155 Whare Āwhina. Seeing the struggle on the ground made it clear: we don’t just have a money problem in Taitokerau; we have a "system" problem. We’re trying to grow a garden using the logic of a machine.

On a personal level, I went through a struggle that tipped my world upside down. I’m only here today thanks to the grace of God (Yahweh/Io), a loving family, and a challenge from a Kaumātua that set me on a new path.

Ko wai au?

I’m an uri of Ngāpuhi, descended from Rahiri via my 4 x great-grandfather Pōmare I, the original rangatira of Ngāti Manu. I also whakapapa to Ngāti Porou (Te Araroa) and Tainui (Paeroa and Ngāruawāhia) by blood, and to Ngāti Raukatauri / Tamaaterau (Kennedy Bay / Papaaroha) by whāngai.

On my mother’s side, I come from the Albertlanders, non-conformist English settlers who came to the Kaipara in the 1860s to build a "New Zion" based on cooperation and shared values.

I was born in the Hokianga, raised in Te Hapua, and schooled in Kaitaia. Aside from a few years in Auckland and Melbourne, Taitokerau has always been my home. Today, I’m based in Maungatapere, working in kaupapa Māori healthcare, social services, justice and housing. I am a practicing Christian with a deep love for people of all faiths.

Why I Do This

I have no corporate backing or financial hidden agendas. I do this work independently because I believe it’s right. After seeing the damage done to our people and land by a "rigged" system, I wanted to observe a better reality into existence.

  • Identity: Tangata whenua, Northland through and through.

  • Spirit: Guided by faith and a commitment to peace and goodwill.

  • Values: I care more about how the "pie" is shared than how big it gets. I believe real progress starts in the soil, with whānau and hapū, not with the government.

The Methodology: How I Problem Solve

I don't just guess; I run every idea through a specific "High-Fidelity" filter:

  1. Quantum Physics (David Deutsch): Using the best science we have to explain how the universe actually works.

  2. Mātauranga Māori (Rev. Māori Marsden): Applying the deep wisdom of the Whare Wānanga o Ngāpuhi.

  3. The Gospels: Following the original teachings of Christ (stripping away the political baggage and "churchy" dogma).

  4. The Mauri Model (Dr. Kepa Morgan): A decision-making tool that asks: "Does this project actually add life to the environment, the culture, the people, and the economy?" If it doesn’t pass the "Mauri-o-meter," it doesn't make the cut.

Answering the Wero

Stop seeing yourself as a cog in a machine and start seeing yourself as a vital thread in the web. We aren't just consumers of a broken system anymore; we are the builders of a new one.

Authorship & Methodology

Principal Investigator: David Hovell, Strategic Analyst & Lead Researcher, The Quantum Whakapapa Project

Declaration of Intent

This mahi has been undertaken under the authority of, and for the benefit of, the author’s whakapapa, past, present, and future. It serves as an assertion of intellectual and spiritual sovereignty, operationalising the "Universal Explainer" capability of the Ngāpuhi worldview. It rejects the deficit narratives imposed by colonial observation and instead collapses the wave function of our reality into one of abundance, resilience, and connection.
