REFLECTIVE INSIGHT #003 - DOCTRINE OF DISCOVERY - WHEN THE CROWN STOLE THE CROSS
The theft of the signal
Kia ora e te whānau. Grab a seat here on the porch. Today we need to talk about a very specific kind of theft. It was not just a theft of land or resources, it was a theft of the signal. For generations here in Taitokerau, we have been living with a version of faith that feels a bit "off," like a radio station with too much static.
This happened because, back in the 1800s, the political forces of the British Crown did something very clever and very cruel. They took the message of Ihu (Yeshua’s name in the Paipera Tapu), which is all about connection and love, and they put a colonial mask over it. They used the Cross to hide the Crown’s hunger for power. This was not an accident, it was a deliberate strategy to separate us from everything that makes us strong.
The when and the why
This distortion started long before the ships arrived in Aotearoa. It began in the 15th century with something called the Doctrine of Discovery. These were laws made by powerful leaders in Europe who decided that any land not owned by "Christians" was essentially empty and ready to be taken.
The "why" was simple: it was about extraction. The empires of the world needed a spiritual excuse to expand their borders and fill their treasuries. They needed a way to tell themselves they were doing "God’s work" while they were actually dismantling the homes and lives of indigenous peoples. When they arrived here, they brought this "Empire Style" of thinking with them, using it to justify taking our whenua.
How they cut the threads
The "how" was through a process of forced separation. The Crown knew that if we stayed connected to Io, our language, and each other, we would be too strong to control. So, they used their version of Christianity to cut those threads one by one.
First, they separated us from our whenua. They turned the land from a living ancestor into a "piece of property" that could be bought and sold. Then, they attacked our language and cultural practices, calling our ancient wisdom "heathen" or "evil." By doing this, they were trying to cut our connection to the Source, replacing our understanding of a Woven Universe with a distant, judgmental version of God that served their political goals.
The words of Ihu
The best way to fight a lie is to return to the original truth. Ihu spoke about a truth that does not belong to any empire or government. It is a truth that lives in the spirit.
"And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:32, NKJV)
"A ka mōhio koutou ki te pono, mā te pono hoki koutou ka tūrangatira ai." (Translated from the original Greek: kai gnōsesthe tēn alētheian)
Reclaiming our authority
When Ihu spoke about being free, He used words that relate to being a "tūrangatira", having the authority and dignity of a leader. The Crown’s version of the faith wanted us to be "subjects," but the original signal from Ihu wants us to be sons and daughters of the Creator.
By reclaiming our language and our spiritual practices, we are not moving away from God. We are actually moving closer to the real Source. We are clearing away the colonial static so we can hear Wairua Tapu clearly again. This is about realising that our connection to the land and to each other was never actually broken, it was just covered up by a bad explanation.
Fixing the soil
Today, our wero is to stop running the "Crown’s software" in our hearts. We have to look at the parts of our faith that make us feel small, isolated, or ashamed, and ask if those ideas came from Ihu or from an empire.
When we reconnect with our whānau, our language, and our whenua, we are performing an act of spiritual physics. We are restoring the mauri that was drained away. We are building a future for Taitokerau where we are no longer separated from the Source or each other. The Truth is finally coming out, and it is time for us to walk in that light together.
