THE ALPHA FREQUENCY #723 - TE ORANGA AKE: HOLISTIC FLOURISHING AND WHĀNAU RESTORATION
More Than Survival
Kia ora, whānau. Today we are talking about what true healing looks like for us here in Taitokerau. Too often, modern systems try to treat our health like a collection of separate, disconnected boxes. We might try to fix a physical illness but ignore mental distress, or we talk about spiritual growth while our families struggle to buy groceries. Ihu (Yeshua’s name in the Paipera Tapu) did not come to start a rigid new religion or give us a list of dry rules. He came to bring us Te Oranga Ake, which means total, holistic flourishing for the whole person and the entire whānau.
When we look at the challenges we face in the North, from low incomes to family struggles, we can see that standard approaches are keeping us in survival mode. Ihu offers a complete turnaround. His message challenges any structure or system that prioritises taking resources from our land without caring for the actual health and wellbeing of our people.
The Whare Model
We can see this beautiful healing in action through the grassroots mahi of groups like Te Whare Ruruhau o Meri. They use the traditional Māori whare, or house, as a practical model to understand family dynamics and face deep issues like family violence. By helping whānau reconnect with their wairuatanga and their whakapapa, they build a reliable path to heal from the historical traumas of colonisation.
This is not about complicated academic theories; it is about real life. Wairua Tapu guides us to patch up the cracks in our homes from the ground up, making sure our foundations are strong so that the whole family can thrive together in peace.
Four Pillars
Ihu's teachings show us that a healthy life rests on four main pillars, just like the corner posts of a physical whare. The first post is cultural connection, which means knowing exactly who you are as a child of God and a person of this land. The second post is building stronger whānau, where parents are safe, loving, and truly present for one another.
The third post is creating safer communities by working together across the region so that every single home becomes a safe haven. Finally, the fourth post is raising thriving tamariki. Our children are precious taonga, and they carry the future of our people. Let us look at what the scriptures tell us about this complete, abundant life that Ihu promises.
"The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly." - John 10:10 (Ethiopian Orthodox Bible)
Ge'ez text: አነሰ መጻእኩ ከመ ሕይወተ ይርከቡ ወከመ ይትርፈውም።
Te Reo Maori, Paipera Tapu, 1868 translation: I haere mai hoki ahau kia whiwhi ai ratou ki te ora, kia nui rawa ai hoki.
Healing the Whole
Ihu never broke people into separate pieces. When He walked the earth, He healed physical bodies, restored broken minds, and brought peace to human spirits all at once. This is the difference between what we call Babylonian style siloed health and Kingdom style holistic flourishing. The old way keeps us separated and just scraping by, while the way of the Kingdom brings every part of our lives together.
When we align ourselves with this deeper truth, we can stop settling for basic survival. We can start building the healthy, vibrant life that our ancestors always dreamed of for us, viewing our beautiful North as a shining light to the rest of the world.
Practical Steps
Bringing Te Oranga Ake into your daily life starts with small, honest actions. Take a moment today to look closely at your own whare. Is there a part of your life, whether it is physical health, a broken relationship, or your spiritual walk, that needs real restoration? Do not separate your faith from your daily needs. Bring your money worries and your bodily pains straight to Ihu.
Make intentional time to sit with your tamariki or mokopuna today. Speak words of life, hope, and Mauri Ora over them, reminding them of their incredible worth. By stitching our faith into our daily struggles, we allow Wairua Tapu to transform our communities from the roots up.
