THE ALPHA FREQUENCY #724 - FULLY MĀORI, FULLY CHRISTIAN: RECLAIMING THE GOSPEL THROUGH WHAKAPAPA

The Power of Intersection

Kia ora, whānau. Today we are exploring a powerful intersection of identity. For too long, people have felt they had to choose between their culture and their faith, but Yeshua never asked us to leave our Whakapapa at the door. In fact, it is through our connection to our ancestors and the land that we truly understand His message.

In the modern Taitokerau context, being "fully Māori and fully Christian" is a powerful intersection of faith and identity. It is a rejection of the old "civilising" mission that suggested Māori had to abandon their culture to follow Yeshua. Instead, it is about reclaiming the Gospel as a tool for Tino Rangatiratanga (self-determination) and cultural resistance.

Yeshua taught that He came to fulfill, not to destroy (Matthew 5:17). When we look at His message through the lens of Mātauranga Māori, we see that His virtues, like hospitality, stewardship, and love, resonate immediately with traditional Māori life.

Whakapapa as a Spiritual Framework

Indigenous theology in the North is characterised by Whanaungatanga: a fundamental understanding of the world as genealogically and biologically connected. We are not separate from the natural world; we are an integral part of it.

By acknowledging this interconnectedness, we move away from Eurocentric hierarchies and toward Māori-led aspirations. This includes:

  • Te Reo Māori as a Sacred Language: Acknowledging our native tongue as a valid academic and spiritual language that needs no translation.

  • The Whenua as an Ancestor: Seeing the land not as a commodity to be owned, but as a "determinant of health" and a gift from God to be protected through Kaitiakitanga.

  • Covenantal Identity: Viewing the Treaty of Waitangi as a sacred covenant between sovereign peoples, a concept rooted in a Māori reading of the Bible.

Remembering Who You Are

Yeshua’s true value in Taitokerau is His ability to help us "remember always your ancestors" and not lose sight of who we truly are. By stripping back the colonial "iron" from our theology, we find a faith that celebrates our unique tribal sovereignty rather than trying to homogenise us.

Practical Daily Steps

  • Speak the Word: Use Te Reo Māori in your prayers and daily life as a way to reclaim your spiritual voice.

  • Walk the Land: Spend time on your ancestral whenua, recognising it as a source of health and a connection to both your tūpuna and the Creator.

  • Affirm Your Identity: Remind yourself today that your Whakapapa is not a barrier to your faith, it is the very soil in which your faith grows.
