THE ALPHA FREQUENCY #724 - FULLY MĀORI, FULLY CHRISTIAN: RECLAIMING THE GOSPEL THROUGH WHAKAPAPA

A Common Lie

Kia ora, whānau. Let us talk about who we are and how we stand before God. For a very long time, people in Taitokerau have been told a destructive lie. They were made to feel that they had to choose between their beautiful Māori culture and their Christian faith. Many thought they had to leave their culture and their whakapapa at the church door just to be accepted.

But Ihu (Yeshua’s name in the Paipera Tapu) never asked us to drop our heritage. He is the one who created our unique family lines, our language, and our deep ties to this land. When we understand this, we realise that our identity is not a barrier to faith, it is the very soil where our faith is meant to grow.

Standing Strong Together

Being fully Māori and fully Christian is a beautiful reality. It means we completely reject the old missionary ideas that suggested our ancestors had to be changed into copies of Europeans before they could follow God. We do not need to adopt Western ways of thinking to be good Christians.

Instead, we use the true message of the Gospel to stand tall in our own skin. This gives us the strength to seek true peace, love, and Goodwill to Mankind, working from the grassroots up to lift our communities instead of chasing cold financial growth.

Connected To Creation

In the North, our spiritual life is built on how we are connected to everything around us. This is what we call whanaungatanga. We do not view ourselves as separate from the natural world; we are a living part of it.

When we see the world through this lens, we look after our environment and our families as a collective responsibility. To help us understand how deeply our Creator cares for this natural connection, let us look at what the scriptures tell us about the wild flowers.

"Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; and yet I say to you that even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these. Now if God so clothes the grass of the field... will He not much more clothe you?" - Matthew 6:28-30 (Ethiopian Orthodox Bible)

Our Unique Value

This scripture shows us how deeply God cares for our natural world and for each of us. Ihu tells us to look at how the flowers grow. They do not stress, and they do not try to copy any other plant. God dresses them beautifully in their own unique design.

In the exact same way, God loves our distinct Māori identity. He does not want us to fade into a boring crowd where everyone is forced to look and act the same. He wants us to blossom beautifully right here in the North, showing that our local focus can be a shining light to the rest of the world.

Three Sacred Cornerstones

To live out this truth in our daily lives, we can focus on three simple principles. First, Te Reo Māori is a sacred language. We do not need to translate our deepest thoughts into English for God to hear them. Wairua Tapu understands our native tongue perfectly when we pray. Second, the whenua is a precious gift from God. The land is like an ancestor that feeds and sustains us, and we must practice kaitiakitanga to protect it rather than treating it like property to buy and sell.

Third, we view Te Tiriti o Waitangi as a sacred covenant. This is a holy agreement between sovereign peoples, built directly on biblical promises of fairness and respect. It is about sharing the pie equally and ensuring that our local families have the power to make their own decisions.

Real Grassroots Action

Real progress always happens when whānau and hapū take action into their own hands to fix the soil of our communities. When we look after one another and honor our roots, our faith becomes alive and active.

Today, take a few practical steps to reclaim your voice. Use Te Reo Māori in your quiet times of prayer. Walk on your ancestral whenua and thank the Creator for your family lines. Remind yourself that your whakapapa is a gift to be celebrated, guiding Taitokerau into a better and more loving society.
