THE ALPHA FREQUENCY #721 - DECOLONISING THE GOOD NEWS: FROM IMPERIAL TOOL TO INDIGENOUS LIBERATION
Stripping the Colonial Layers
Kia ora, whānau. Today we are starting a deep dive into how the message of Yeshua actually works in Taitokerau. For too long, the "Gospel" was used as a tool for colonisation, but when we look at the actual words of Yeshua, we see they are the keys to our liberation and our Hauora (wellbeing).
The history of the North is complex. While Christianity was sometimes used as a tool of imperial expansion, our ancestors in Ngāpuhi and Te Rarawa rapidly indigenised the message because it spoke to their own spiritual reality. The early missionaries often brought a "civilising" mission, but Yeshua’s direct teaching was never about assimilation into European culture; it was about life.
Yeshua said: "I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full" (John 10:10). This "full life" is what we call Te Oranga Ake, the holistic flourishing of the whānau.
Whanaungatanga: The Core of the Message
One reason the Gospel resonated so deeply in the north is that Yeshua’s parables and virtues fit perfectly with traditional Māori life. His message is built on Whanaungatanga, the fundamental truth that everything in the world is genealogically and biologically connected.
When we decolonise the message, we stop seeing land (whenua) as a "commodity" for extraction and start seeing it as a "determinant of health". We move from a theology of individual salvation to one of whānau restoration and social justice.
The Truth that Liberates
Yeshua taught that "the truth will set you free" (John 8:32). In a modern Taitokerau context, this means:
Rejecting Scarcity: Dismantling the "myth of scarcity" that keeps us in a cycle of poverty and fear.
Embracing Identity: Affirming that you can be "fully Māori and fully Christian".
Restoring Sovereignty: Using the Gospel as a means to resist assimilation and reinforce our Tino Rangatiratanga (self-determination).
By stripping back the layers of colonial misunderstanding, we find the liberating power of the Gospel that leads to true abundance for generations to come.
Practical Daily Steps
Audit the Narrative: Ask yourself if your understanding of faith is based on "civilising" rules or the liberating life of Yeshua.
Connect to Whakapapa: Spend time reflecting on how your connection to your ancestors and the land is an integral part of your spiritual wellbeing.
Choose Abundance: When you feel the "fear of not enough," remind yourself of Yeshua's promise of life to the full.
