The Meaning of Names

In our world today, a name is often just a label we choose because it sounds nice. But for our ancestors here in the North, a name was much more than that. The names given to Io-matua-kore were actually forensic descriptions of how the universe works. They were like a set of instructions or a blueprint for reality itself.

Three Ways of Seeing

To get a clear picture of the truth, we use what I call the triangulation of truth. We look at our Māori names for Io, we look at the names used in the Bible, and we look at the hard data of modern science. When these three different views point to the same thing, we know we have found something solid to stand on.

The Eye of the Creator

One of the most famous names is Io-mata-kana, which means the all-seeing one. In the world of physics, scientists have found something called the "observer effect." This means that the very act of looking at something actually changes how it behaves. Io-mata-kana is the ultimate observer. It is the gaze of the Creator that keeps the stars in their places and stops the world from falling into a mess.

The Source of Information

We also speak of Io-te-wananga, the source of all wisdom and knowledge. Science tells us that everything in the universe is built on information or "code," just like the software on a computer. Io-te-wananga is the mind behind that code. This is why the universe makes sense to us, it was designed by a mind that values order and logic.

The Living Word

This idea of a universe built on wisdom is exactly what we find in the teachings of Ihu. He is the one who brings that divine logic down to earth so we can understand it.

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God." (John 1:1, NKJV)

"I te tīmatanga te Kupu, i te Atua te Kupu, ko te Atua anō te Kupu." (Translated from the original Greek: En archē ēn ho Logos)

A Universe Made for Life

When we call upon Io-matua, the parent and provider, we are acknowledging that the universe isn't a cold, empty machine. It was designed specifically for life to thrive. This gives us a deep sense of safety. We can walk through Taitokerau knowing that the "software" of the world is written by a parent who wants us to succeed.

Living in the Light

Understanding these names helps us realise that we are not living in a random accident. We are part of an intentional design that is deeply loved and carefully maintained. When we align our lives with these names, we start to move away from the chaos of the world and toward a state of well-being and peace. It is about learning to read the map our ancestors left for us.
