THE WOVEN UNIVERSE #911 - THE TOHUNGA ARCHIVE: NAVIGATING THE DEEP SPIRIT OF THE FIELD

Experts of the Spirit

In the traditions of Te Tai Tokerau, the word "tohunga" carries a deep meaning that is often lost in modern translations. Rev. Māori Marsden, who was himself a trained tohunga, taught that this role was about much more than just knowing rituals or being a specialist in a craft. He saw the tohunga as a navigator of what he called the "Deep Spirit" of the land. These were the experts who could look past the surface of the world we see and interact with the invisible layers of connection that hold the Woven Universe together.

The Pure Story

Through the lineage of the great navigator Nukutawhiti, Marsden understood that the tohunga were the guardians of a massive treasury of wisdom. He viewed this as the sacred storehouse of our ancestors and the Creator. Their primary job was to protect the pure, uncorrupted story of our whakapapa. This meant ensuring that the connection between the Source and our daily lives remained clear and free from outside distractions. They were the ones who kept the spiritual path strong so that the people could thrive in abundance.

Finding the Hidden Root

Marsden taught that a tohunga works like a master gardener or healer. When there was trouble in a community, or when the land was suffering from "Mauri Mate" (a state of decay and sickness), the tohunga would move their focus deep into the unseen realms of Te Pō (the night) and Te Kore (the void of potential). This is like tracing a withered branch back to a hidden root to find out what went wrong. By using prayer, focused intent, and their given authority (mana), they could restore the mauri of a place or a person, bringing them back into a state of order and life.

Discerning the True Path

One of the most important skills a tohunga possessed was the ability to listen deeply and tell things apart. Marsden recognised that the Woven Universe is full of many different voices and influences, and not all of them are healthy. Some influences represent "Babylonian" distractions, the kind of confusion that leads to greed, taking without giving, and a breakdown of our families. The tohunga had to be able to tell the difference between the life-giving breath of the Creator and the destructive confusion that causes our communities to lose their strength and wealth.

The Master Navigator

Marsden was very clear that no human being holds this power on their own. He pointed us directly toward Ihu (Yeshua's name in the Paipera Tapu) as the Master Tohunga and the ultimate Navigator of our paths. Ihu is the one who provides the clear, true direction that guides us through the storms of life. He is the one who has the final authority to turn heavy trouble into a reality of healing and peace. When we align our own daily efforts with His vision, we are tying ourselves back into the most powerful source of life in existence.

The Great Teacher

Ihu spoke about how the Spirit helps us access this deep treasury of truth and memory, ensuring we never lose our way:

Ethiopian Orthodox Bible (John 14:26): "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you."

Reclaiming Our Role

As we lead the shift to a better society here in the North, we are all being called to reclaim a bit of that "Navigator" mindset. We may not all be tohunga in the traditional sense, but we can all learn to look beneath the surface. We can choose to stop the leaks in our whānau by prioritising love and fairness over empty political growth. By following the example of Rev. Māori Marsden and the leadership of Ihu, we can turn Taitokerau into a shining light that shows the world how to walk in harmony with the deep spirit of the land.
