WOVEN UNIVERSE #910 - RHEOCENTRIC REALITY: WHY THE UNIVERSE IS A FLOW, NOT A MACHINE

The Error of the Machine

In the Whare Wānanga o Te Tai Tokerau, Rev. Māori Marsden was trained to see the world through a lens that was fundamentally different from the Western industrial mindset. He identified what he called the Newtonian Error, the mistaken belief that the universe is a dead, mechanical machine made of separate parts. Marsden argued that this view leads to the Leaky Bucket of extraction, where we treat the land as a resource to be used up. Instead, he taught that the universe is rheocentric, meaning it is a dynamic process defined by flow, change, and continuous interaction.

The Universe as a Process

Rheocentric comes from the Greek word rheos, meaning flow. Through his mastery of Greek and his traditional training, Marsden showed that the Woven Universe is not a "thing" but a "doing". In modern physics, this aligns with process philosophy and quantum field theory, where particles are not solid billiard balls but are temporary excitations in a field of energy. Our whakapapa is not a static tree, it is a flowing river of information and life force that moves through time and space.

The Rhythm of the Woven Universe

Because reality is a flow, it possesses a rhythm and a pulse. Marsden taught that the role of the tohunga was to observe and align with these natural rhythms.

  • Static View: Sees a tree as a piece of timber (a commodity).

  • Rheocentric View: Sees a tree as a temporary manifestation of the flow of energy, nutrients, and sunlight within the department of Tāne-mahuta.
When we view the world as a flow, we move from being "owners" of property to being "navigators" of systems. We recognise that the mauri of our region is a current that must be kept moving to remain healthy and vibrant.

Yeshua: The Sustainer of the Flow

Rev. Māori Marsden recognised Yeshua as the one who initiates and sustains this cosmic flow. In the biblical record, Yeshua is described as the "Living Water" and the "Life", terms that Marsden saw as perfectly rheocentric. Yeshua is the central processor who ensures the flow of information from the potential of Te Kore into the light of Te Ao Mārama remains constant and purposeful. He is the one who prevents the flow from becoming stagnant or chaotic. By aligning ourselves with Yeshua, we are stepping into the "slipstream" of the Woven Universe, where our efforts are amplified by the divine rhythm of creation.

Navigating the Current in Tai Tokerau

The legacy of the Tai Tokerau Whare Wānanga, preserved through the lineage of Nukutawhiti, teaches us how to be expert navigators. In our region, we are faced with complex challenges that cannot be solved by treating the world like a machine. Marsden’s work calls us to reclaim our rheocentric heritage. We must look at our economy, our environment, and our social structures as interconnected flows of mauri. By managing these flows with the wisdom of the Woven Universe, we ensure that the current of abundance reaches every member of our whānau. We are not just fixing parts, we are nourishing the life of the whole system.
