THE WOVEN UNIVERSE #910 - RHEOCENTRIC REALITY: WHY THE UNIVERSE IS A FLOW, NOT A MACHINE

The Great Machine Error

In the Whare Wānanga o Te Tai Tokerau, Rev. Māori Marsden was trained to see the world through a lens that was completely different from the Western industrial mindset. He often spoke about the "Newtonian Error." This is the mistaken belief that the universe is just a dead, mechanical machine made of separate parts. When we view the world as a machine, we start treating the land as a resource to be used up and our people as cogs in a system. This type of thinking leads to the "leaky bucket" of extraction and decay that we see in so many of our communities today.

The Universe as Flow

Marsden taught that the universe is not a machine, it is "rheocentric." This word comes from the Greek word rheos, which means "flow." Through his mastery of Greek and his traditional training, Marsden showed that the Woven Universe is not a "thing" but a "doing." It is a dynamic process of energy and information that never stops moving. In modern science, this matches what we call quantum field theory, where particles are not solid balls, but temporary ripples in a field of energy. Our world is a living, breathing current of potential.

From Things to Doing

Our whakapapa is not a static tree, it is a flowing river of life force that moves through time and space. When we shift from a static view to a flow view, our whole world changes. A static view sees a tree as just a piece of timber, a commodity to be sold. But a rheocentric view sees a tree as a living process, interacting with the soil, the birds, and the rain. It is a part of the Woven Universe that is constantly "doing" life. This perspective shifts our focus from "how much can I take?" to "how can I support the flow?"

The Wisdom of Rhythms

Because reality is a flow, it possesses a rhythm and a pulse. Marsden taught that the role of the Tohunga, and our role today as navigators, is to observe and align with these natural rhythms. When we try to force the world to fit into our rigid machine schedules, we create friction and waste. But when we align our local businesses, our iwi decisions, and our whānau lives with the natural current of the mauri, we find that life becomes much more effortless and abundant. We stop fighting the river and start navigating it.

The Living Water Source

Ihu (Yeshua's name in the Paipera Tapu) is the one who sustains this cosmic current. He is the Source who ensures the flow never runs dry. Marsden viewed Ihu as the sustainer of the current, making sure the flow moves toward well-being and life. He provides the "Living Water" that keeps the entire Woven Universe from becoming stagnant. When we plug back into Him, we are entering into the perfect rhythm of creation. Ihu ensures that the information flowing through the weave remains pure and full of life.

Words of the Current

Ihu spoke about this divine flow when He described the spirit of those who follow Him:

"He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water." Ethiopian Orthodox Bible (John 7:38)

Direct Ge'ez to Te Reo Māori Translation: Ko te tangata e whakapono ana ki ahau, e rite ana ki tā te karaipiture i kī ai, ka rere mai ngā awa o te wai ora i roto i tōna kōpū.

Navigating Toward Abundance

To lead the transition to a better society in Taitokerau, we must stop being cogs and start being navigators. We must reject the political "BS" that tells us the North is a place of scarcity and instead see the powerful current of potential flowing through our land. By prioritising the flow of mauri over the growth of profit, we are fixing the soil for our future. We are choosing to live in harmony with the Woven Universe, proving that a society based on flow and connection is a shining light for the rest of the world.
