ALPHA FREQUENCY #759 - KAIHAUTŪ AND KAITIAKI: NAVIGATIONAL OFFICES

Gifts As People

In many Western traditions, we often focus on the "offices" of the church as titles of status or positions in a hierarchy. We think of the "Apostle" or the "Pastor" as a rank to be achieved. However, when we look at the letter to the Ephesians, we see that these gifts are actually people given by the Creator to the community. They are not just roles; they are individuals empowered by Wairua Tapu (the Holy Spirit) to serve as the structural integrity of the iwi.

When we reframe these offices through a Māori lens, they become navigational and protective roles designed to ensure the safety and flourishing of our collective waka. They shift from being about "who is in charge" to being about "who is looking after the people". This perspective prioritises the responsibility of guarding the mana of the Gospel and the well-being of every whānau member.

The Navigator and Matakite

The role of the Apostle is reframed as the kaihautū, the navigator of the waka. Just as a traditional navigator understands the stars and the currents, the spiritual kaihautū keeps the people on course through turbulent spiritual waters. They are sent with authority, not to rule, but to guide the community toward new horizons while ensuring the vessel stays upright and moving forward.

Alongside the navigator stands the Prophet, reframed as the matakite. This is the one with "spiritual sight" who can perceive the dangers and opportunities that lie ahead for the iwi. The matakite doesn't just predict events; they proclaim the heart of the Creator, providing the spiritual discernment needed to avoid hidden reefs and catch the right winds.

The Guardian of Whānau

The Pastor is reframed as the kaitiaki of the whānau. While the Western image is often a shepherd with a flock, the kaitiaki is the guardian who ensures that the mauri (life force) of every individual is nurtured. They are responsible for making sure everyone remains connected to their whakapapa in Yeshua, providing the care and protection needed for the most vulnerable members to thrive.

The Teacher is reframed as the kaiwhakaako or the tohunga of the Word. This person does more than just share information; they initiate the people into the "knowledge of the holy" through a process of spiritual wānanga. They ensure that the wisdom of the scriptures is woven into the daily life of the community, grounding our modern actions in eternal truths.

The Chief Navigator

In this woven theology, Yeshua is the "Central Pole" (Te Pou Herenga Waka) to which all our individual lives and gifts are tied. He is the one who holds the whakapapa of all nations and the source from which the mana of the Spirit flows. He taught us that true greatness in these offices is found in service, not in seeking to be served by others.

"But it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you shall be your servant. And whoever of you desires to be first shall be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many." (Mark 10:43-45 NKJV)

"Otira e kore e pera i roto i a koutou: engari ki te hiahia tetahi kia nui i roto i a koutou, me whakatane ia hei kaimahi ma koutou: Ki te hiahia hoki tetahi o koutou kia noho hei tuatahi, me whakatane ia hei pononga ma te katoa. Kihai hoki te Tama a te tangata i haere mai kia mahia he mahi mana, engari kia mahi ia, kia tuku hoki i tona ora hei utu mo te tini." (Mako 10:43-45)

When we see our leaders as kaihautū and kaitiaki, we realise they are gifts given for our maturity and unity. They are the paddles and the sails provided by Wairua Tapu to carry us toward the shore of full light. Let us support those who carry these responsibilities, realising that their work is essential for the restoration of all things in Taitokerau.
