ALPHA FREQUENCY #760 - KOTAHITANGA AND UTU: THE BALANCED MESH

The Mesh of Unity

We have reached the end of our journey through the spiritual gifts, and it is only right that we conclude by looking at how they all weave together. In Western cultures, when we talk about the "body of Yeshua", we often focus on "inclusion", making sure everyone has a seat at the table. But in the North, we see this through the lens of kotahitanga, which is a deep, inherent unity and togetherness that recognises the mana of every single soul. We are not just a collection of individuals who decided to hang out; we are a unified mesh where every strand is vital.

This unity is not something we create through our own effort; it is a spiritual state called Mauri Ora, where the breath of the Spirit flows freely through every member. We are a living, breathing iwi in Yeshua, where our connection to one another is as real and as physical as our connection to the land. When we prioritise this collective life force, we move away from competing for attention and start focusing on the health of the whole.

The Power of the Hidden

One of the most profound teachings in the Bible is that the parts of the body that seem "weaker" or less visible are actually indispensable. In our Māori way of thinking, these "hidden" parts are like the internal organs that sustain our mauri. A person whose gift is simply to "be", to hold the mana of our elders or the innocence of our children, is just as vital as the one who speaks from the front.

By reframing our gifts this way, we prevent a kind of "spiritual sickness" where we devour one another through comparison. Every member’s contribution is seen as a taonga (treasure) that is essential for the flourishing of the whole. When we realise that the quietest prayer or the smallest act of service is keeping the "internal organs" of our community healthy, we find a new respect for the diverse ways Wairua Tapu (the Holy Spirit) works among us.

Utu as Restoration

If one member of our whānau suffers, we all suffer, and if one is honoured, we all rejoice. This is the essence of the Māori ethic of utu, which is about maintaining balance and reciprocity in all things. Spiritual gifts are essentially the tools of utu. If our community is out of balance because of poverty, trauma, or brokenness, Wairua Tapu imparts specific gifts to restore that balance.

Exercising a gift is an act of "seeking the best solutions" for our collective well-being. It is not about personal "abilities", but about a spiritual obligation to ensure that the life force, or hau, of the community remains settled and strong. In Taitokerau, we are learning that our gifts are meant to "plug the leaks" in our society, ensuring that no one is left in a state of lack.

The Central Pole of Our Waka

As we look toward the future, we see that Yeshua is our "Central Pole", or Te Pou Herenga Waka, to which all our individual lives and gifts are tied. He is the one who holds the whakapapa of all nations and through whom the mana of Wairua Tapu flows into the world. By staying tied to Him, we ensure that our waka moves forward in unison toward the world of full light.

"And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice with it." (1 Corinthians 12:26 NKJV)

"Ki te mamae hoki tetahi wahi, e mamae tahi ana nga wahi katoa; ki te whakahonoretia ranei tetahi wahi, e koa tahi ana nga wahi katoa." (1 Koriniti 12:26)

When we operate in this balanced mesh, every gift is a treasure, every person is a carrier of mana, and every act of service is a weaving together of the divine and the human for the restoration of all things. Let us continue to deploy our taonga with humility, realising that we are part of an unbroken journey from the stars to this present moment, inseparable from the land and each other.
