ALPHA FREQUENCY #750 - MANA AND TAPU: THE CURRENCY OF POWER
Power Held In Trust
When we talk about spiritual gifts in the North, we have to talk about the concept of mana. In our worldview, mana refers to extraordinary power, essence, or presence that comes from the atua (God) and our ancestors. It is the very currency of spiritual power, but it works very differently than the way the world views "power". While Western culture often sees power as something to be grabbed or owned, mana is never a personal possession.
Instead, mana is a spiritual authority that is held in trust for the benefit of the collective. When Wairua Tapu (the Holy Spirit) imparts a gift to you, it is not a "skill" for your own resume, but a manifestation of mana flowing through you for the benefit of the iwi. You are the vessel, the carrier of a presence that belongs to the whole community.
The Sacredness Of The Gift
Closely tied to mana is the concept of tapu, which signifies sacredness and restriction. In Te Ao Māori, if you are operating in a spiritual gift, you are in a state of tapu. This means you are "set apart" for a divine purpose by Wairua Tapu. You are no longer in the ordinary space, you are standing in a place of direct connection to the Source of all life.
This state of tapu requires us to be careful. It is not something to be taken lightly or used for "show". Because a spiritual gift is tapu, it necessitates tikanga, or customary practice, to ensure the gift is exercised correctly. Tikanga is what keeps us safe and ensures that the spiritual balance of the community is maintained.
Restoring The Balance
The counter-concept to tapu is noa, which refers to the ordinary or common state of being. In our traditional ways, rituals were often used to move a person from a heightened state of tapu back into the safety of noa after a profound spiritual experience. This is a vital part of prioritising the well-being of the person exercising the gift.
We must realise that we cannot stay in that high-intensity spiritual state forever. Moving back to noa ensures that the person remains grounded and safe within their whānau. It is about balance, ensuring that the power of Wairua Tapu is used to build up, never to burn out or create an ego that thinks it is above the people.
The Authority Of Yeshua
Yeshua spoke clearly about authority, but he always linked it to the Source and to the mission of the collective. He showed us that all mana ultimately flows from the Father.
"And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, 'All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.'" (Matthew 28:18 NKJV)
"A ka haere a Ihu, ka korero ki a ratou, ka mea, Kua homai ki ahau nga mana katoa i te rangi, i te whenua hoki." (Matiu 28:18)
By recognising that our gifts are manifestations of this same authority, we move away from pride. We understand that we are simply participants in the great "weaving of mana" that Yeshua coordinates as our Chief Navigator. We are carriers of a sacred trust, given to us so that we can lead our people toward the light of a thriving land.
