ALPHA FREQUENCY #749 - THE COMMUNAL SOUL: REFRAMING INDIVIDUALISM

Welcome To The Series

I am so glad you have joined me for this new journey. Over the next twelve Alpha Frequency posts, we are going to explore what it means to live out our spiritual gifts within the rich landscape of Te Ao Māori. For too long, we have looked at the "gifts of the Spirit" through a lens that is often too small and too focused on the individual. We are going to broaden that horizon, realising that our enablements are not just about us as people, but about our whānau, our land, and our collective future here in the North.

This series is an invitation to see ourselves as part of a woven universe. We will move away from seeing spiritual gifts as just "skills" on a resume and start seeing them as taonga (treasures) that have been handed down to us to care for. It is about understanding that we are a power source being plugged back in, not for our own glory, but for the life force of our entire community.

Beyond Individual Ability

In many Western circles, the study of spiritual gifts is often treated like a personality test. People want to find out what "their" gift is so they can feel empowered or find a role that fits their psychology. While there is nothing wrong with understanding how we are wired, this focus can lead to a bit of a "me-centred" faith. It treats the believer as an isolated island, focusing on internal feelings rather than communal responsibility.

When we look at these biblical enablements through a Māori lens, they undergo a beautiful transformation. They shift from being personal abilities to being communal treasures. These gifts are inextricably linked to our whakapapa (genealogy) and the maintenance of mana. We are not just individuals with "talents", we are carriers of a spiritual authority that belongs to the group.

Gifts As Sacred Treasures

The Bible uses terms like charismata (gifts of grace) to remind us that these are not natural talents we developed ourselves. They are supernatural impartations from Wairua Tapu (the Holy Spirit), granted as an act of divine favour for the purpose of building up the community. In Te Ao Māori, we call these taonga tuku iho, which means treasures handed down from a higher source.

Because these gifts are treasures, they come with a sense of stewardship. They are not ours to keep or to use for personal gain. Instead, they are held in trust for the benefit of the iwi. This changes the way we see ourselves. We are no longer just "gifted people", we are custodians of the divine breath that is meant to flow through us to reach others.

A Supernatural Connection

Wairua Tapu gives these gifts so that the body of believers can be unified and varied at the same time. It is like the different parts of a waka working together to move through the water. Each gift is a manifestation of the Spirit's presence for immediate needs within the whānau. This means that when you exercise a gift, you are actually bringing the presence of the Creator into a physical situation.

This perspective helps us overcome the isolation that so many feel in the modern world. We realise that our unique contribution is vital for the health of the whole. When we prioritise our collective life force over purely extractive profit or personal fame, we begin to speak a new reality into existence. We are not just individuals trying to survive, we are a living, breathing community in Christ.

The Profit Of All

Yeshua taught us that our connection to him is what allows us to be productive and useful to those around us. He used the image of a vine to show that we are all branches, connected to one source, sharing the same life force to produce fruit for the world.

"I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." (John 15:5 NKJV)

"Ko ahau te waina, ko koutou nga peka. Ki te noho tetahi i roto i ahau, me ahau hoki i roto i a ia, he nui tona hua: ki te motu ke hoki i ahau, e kore e taea e koutou tetahi mea." (Ioane 15:5)

When we abide in him, our "gifts" are simply the fruit of that connection. They are not tools for us to show off, but manifestations of his love that nourish everyone in the garden. By reframing our individualism, we open ourselves up to the true power of Wairua Tapu, which always seeks to restore balance and bring life to the collective soul.
