REFLECTIVE INSIGHT #033 - NEURODIVERSITY AND WHANAUNGATANGA: THE “DOUBLE EMPATHY PROBLEM”

Deep Connection

In our world here in Taitokerau, Whanaungatanga is often talked about as just family ties or social networking. But through the lens of Quantum Whakapapa, we see it as something much deeper: a physical description of how we are stitched into the fabric of the universe. When we say "everything is connected," we are not just being poetic; we are describing what physicists call Quantum Entanglement.

Quantum Kinship

In quantum mechanics, particles that have interacted remain linked, sharing a single "wave function" regardless of the distance between them. A change in one instantly affects the other. This physically validates our worldview that the individual is not an autonomous "island" but a node in a vast, non-local web of whakapapa that extends to the land, the water, and the cosmos. For many neurodivergent people, this connection is not just a theory—it is felt viscerally in every waking moment.

Thin Boundaries

The neurodivergent mind often operates with "thin boundaries," meaning it has a heightened receptivity to this quantum field. While a "neurotypical" mind acts as a low-pass filter to keep things simple and manageable, an autistic or ADHD mind often remains in a state of "superposition". It perceives multiple layers of reality, sensory input, and patterns simultaneously. What the system labels as "overwhelm" is actually a fidelity of perception that exceeds the standard filters of the modern world.

A Clash of Physics

This helps us understand the "Double Empathy Problem"—the breakdown in understanding between different types of minds. This is not just a social misunderstanding; it is a "clash of physics". The neurotypical person often creates a stable, social reality by ignoring extra data. Meanwhile, the neurodivergent person is trying to integrate high-fidelity, high-entropy data into a coherent system through "hyper-systemising". When these two ways of processing reality meet, there is friction because they are literally operating on different frequencies.

The Fix

We must move from forcing everyone into a "standard" way of connecting to recognising the value of entanglement. Instead of penalising those with thin boundaries, we should value their ability to sense atmospheric changes and complex patterns that others might miss. By building "Double Empathy" bridges, we can create environments where diverse ways of seeing are used to solve the tangled problems facing our communities.
