REFLECTIVE INSIGHT #026 - THE SACRED ORDER: SAFETY, FUN, AND PURPOSE
A Simple Rule for Life
Here is a deep truth that has been sitting on my heart lately, especially when I look at the heavy challenges facing our beautiful home in the North. This wisdom actually came from my youngest child, who was only eleven at the time. It is a incredibly simple rule of thumb for life, a hierarchy of basic human needs that our modern world constantly gets twisted:
Be safe.
Have fun.
Do what you are here to do.
The major hurdle we face today under the constant pressure of a cold, demanding system is that we frequently swap numbers two and three. We put the "grind" before our joy, and by doing that, we severely damage the very spirit, the wairua, that fuels our actual purpose in life.
1. Safety First
The very first step can never be negotiated: Be safe. In my ongoing research, I talk a lot about building the Economic Pā. Historically, the pā was a secure place of defense, shelter, and storage that ensured the long-term survival of the family group.
You simply cannot grow, create, or thrive if your mind and body are trapped in a constant state of survival mode or total chaos. We need a deep, foundational sense of safety in who we are and where we stand. Whether that means finding financial security through local community initiatives or just having the absolute safety of a warm, dry home, this foundation allows us to finally lower our guard, breathe, and unlock our true potential.
2. The Absolute Necessity of Fun
Next comes the crucial part that we almost always ignore: Have fun. We often treat having fun like an unearned luxury, but for our mental health, it’s an absolute necessity. Fun is what recharges the spirit and moves us from just surviving the week to genuinely thriving (Mauri Ora).
The old world system treats humans like cold, unfeeling machines, viewing fun as an inefficient waste of time. But in a universe built entirely on relationships and connection, joy is the binding energy that keeps us strong. Joy turns our daily tasks from an exhausting drain into a natural, healthy flow.
3. Doing the Work
Only when we are completely safe and our internal cups are topped up with genuine joy can we effectively tackle number three: Do what you were put on this earth to do. This is your true purpose. We are naturally designed to be creators, builders, and active problem-solvers in our communities. But we can never be effective builders if our internal battery is completely flat. When we try to work hard without safety and joy, we crash and burn out. You cannot pour from an empty cup.
Healing the Heaviness in the North
We need to have a serious, honest talk about the mental health crisis carrying over Te Tai Tokerau right now. The heartbreaking statistics we see aren't just cold numbers on a government spreadsheet, they are our cousins, our children, and our neighbours. We are seeing massive rates of anxiety and exhaustion because the vital connections between us are breaking down.
This crisis happens because we have been brainwashed into believing that our worth as human beings comes only from what we produce, how hard we grind, and what we own. We convince ourselves that we have to "earn" the right to rest and be happy. But that thinking is completely backwards.
If you are hurting or struggling right now, please hear this: You do not need to earn your peace. Having fun, laughing with your whānau, and feeling safe are not rewards for working yourself to the bone, they are the essential fuel you need to keep going.
Reordering Our Priorities
To bring Te Whenua Taurikura (The Thriving Land) into reality, we must respect this sacred order. Secure the pā, feed the wairua with joy, and then go out and change the world. Let’s flip the script, look after each other, and prioritise the well-being of our people over the relentless demands of a heartless economy.
