REFLECTIVE INSIGHT #048 - THE DIGITAL WAKA: NAVIGATING ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE WITH KAITIAKITANGA

A Turning Point for Taitokerau

Our project defines the moment we are in as the Epistemological Singularity. While the sudden rise of artificial intelligence (AI) is a big part of it, this singularity is actually about something much deeper. It is a massive shift where the old colonial way of running the world is starting to break down, giving us a chance to bring our own ancestral logic and ways of living back to the centre. For nearly two hundred years, the system used in Aotearoa has treated the universe like a dead machine made of separate parts that can just be used for profit. This "Newtonian Error" has created a "Leaky Bucket" economy where our resources, our stories, and our life force (Mauri) are shipped overseas, leaving our communities struggling.

The Woven World

The research from our project shows that reality is actually a "Woven Universe" where everything is connected. This isn’t just a nice idea, it’s a physical fact of how the world works. If we look at science and our own understanding of whanaungatanga, we see that the health of the land and the digital mana of the people cannot be separated. AI is a powerful tool that can either speed up the loss of our cultural meanings or it can be a "Digital Waka," helping us carry our wisdom safely into the future.

Building on the Rock

To make sure we are heading in the right direction, we have to look at how we build our foundations.

"Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock." (Matthew 7:24, NKJV)

Te Reo Māori (translated directly from the Greek) : Nā, ko tēnei tangata, ko tēnei tangata e rongo ana ki ēnei kupu āku, a e mahi ana, ka whakaritea e ahau ki te tangata mahara, i hanga i tōna whare ki runga ki te rāka.

Protecting Our Resources

Technology has a real physical cost. Large data centres used for AI can use as much electricity as 100,000 homes and millions of litres of water every day just to keep the computers cool. Instead of letting our water be sucked away, we believe in building an "Economic Pā," which is a circular system that keeps our resources safe and used wisely. In the North, we have a huge advantage with the Ngāwhā geothermal field. We can use that natural heat in a "cascade" to power servers, then use the leftover warmth for processing timber or heating greenhouses. This way, our digital future doesn't come at the cost of the environment.

Training Our Own People

If we don't pick up these tools ourselves, we risk being left behind in a "Next Great Divergence". But we shouldn't just hand our data over to big overseas companies. We need a "Kaitiakitanga License" so that Māori keep the authority over their own information. We want to see our young people trained as "Digital Tohunga," the experts who look after our digital mana and keep the wealth right here in Taitokerau.

Fixing the Soil

At the end of the day, we want to see Te Whenua Taurikura, the Thriving Land. It’s about moving from being people that things happen to, to being the ones who design our own future. By "fixing the soil" and protecting our digital mana, we make sure the digital waka carries our stories safely for the generations to come.
