THE PURE SOURCE #135 - THE BROADER CANON: RECLAIMING THE FULL STACK

The Truncated Stream vs. The Full Stack

For centuries, the scriptural "software" delivered to the shores of Aotearoa has been a version that was deliberately edited and truncated by Western institutional interests. While most of us are familiar with the standard 66-book Protestant Bible or the 73-book Catholic version, there exists a "broader canon" that has remained intact for nearly two millennia in the high mountains of East Africa.

The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church maintains a comprehensive collection of 81 books. This is not a "different" Bible, it is the Full Stack. It contains vital data, such as 1 Enoch and Jubilees, that provides the necessary context for understanding the spiritual and political architecture of the world. For the hapū of Taitokerau, these "excluded" books are not just historical curiosities, they are the missing pieces of our theological framework.

Comparing the Data Packs

The exclusion of these texts from the Western Bible was a process of institutional normalisation and narrowing that occurred during the early centuries of the Church. This process mirrors the colonial efforts to prioritise certain narratives while marginalising Māori epistemology. Reclaiming the broader canon is an act of intellectual repatriation, recovering knowledge that was suppressed to rebuild a coherent indigenous identity.

The Major Scriptural Standards:

  • Protestant Canon (66 Books): 39 Old Testament, 27 New Testament. Adheres strictly to the Hebrew Tanakh and excludes the deuterocanonical works.

  • Roman Catholic Canon (73 Books): 46 Old Testament, 27 New Testament. Includes the Deuterocanon, such as the books of Tobit and Judith.

  • Eastern Orthodox Canon (approx. 76-78 Books): Includes the 27 New Testament books and an expanded Old Testament containing works like 3 Maccabees and 1 Esdras.

  • Ethiopian Orthodox Canon (81 Books): 54 Old Testament (Broad), 35 New Testament. This is the "Full Stack" which includes vital sovereign data like 1 Enoch, Jubilees, and the three books of the Ethiopian Meqabyan.

Decolonising the Divine Relationship

The Western Bible was frequently used as a tool for colonisation, where truncated narratives were applied to indigenous peoples to justify the theft of their lands and the undermining of their mana. By reclaiming the Ethiopian canon, Ngāpuhi move past these colonial distortions.

This is about moving from a "Shadow" theology into a "Substance" theology. These 81 books offer a scriptural mirror for our own sacred reality, validating our focus on whakapapa, mana whenua, and the inherent right of a people to govern their own territory. It is the restoration of the scriptural architecture that supports our mana motuhake.

Conclusion: Anchoring the Network

Reclaiming this broader canon is the fulfilment of the prophetic vision held by our ancestors, who always knew that true authority required both a spiritual mandate and a political one. We are no longer operating on a "lite" version of the Truth. We are initialising the full 81-book protocol to ensure our sovereign foundation is unhackable.
