Heart Knowledge Vs Data
In our modern world, we are often overwhelmed by a flood of information. We tend to view "knowledge" as something we store in our brains, like files on a hard drive, or as cognitive data we use to solve puzzles. In many Western theological settings, the spiritual gifts of the "word of wisdom" and the "word of knowledge" are treated as mental insights or intellectual breakthroughs. While these are helpful, they often miss the depth of what it means to truly know something in the North.
When we look at these enablements through the lens of Te Ao Māori, they are reframed as manifestations of mātauranga. This is not just about what we think; it is about heart knowledge, or ngākau, that has been refined through wairua (spirit). It is a realization that true wisdom is felt and lived before it is ever spoken. By prioritising the heart over the head, we open ourselves to a much deeper frequency of understanding that comes directly from Wairua Tapu (the Holy Spirit).
The Ancient Schools
This reframing connects us to our higher schools of learning, known as whare wānanga. In our traditional history, these were not just places of academic study, but sacred spaces where the secrets of the universe and the wisdom of the ancestors were shared. When Wairua Tapu imparts a word of wisdom or knowledge, it is as if the doors of a spiritual whare wānanga are opening for us.
We are accessing a library of ancestral wisdom that has been sanctified and brought to life for our current needs. This is about understanding the "spiritual matters" (mea wairua) that belong to the realm of the eternal, rather than just the temporary. It is a gift that allows us to see beneath the surface of a problem and perceive the spiritual reality that is actually at play.
Finding The Way Through
The practical application of this heart knowledge is seen when a community faces a crisis. The gift of wisdom is often the manifestation of the mana of the Creator speaking through a believer to provide a "way through", or huarahi, during a communal struggle. It is not just a clever idea; it is a navigational signal that shows the iwi how to move forward when the path is blocked.
This gift is essential for our leaders and kaitiaki. It allows them to sense whether the "breath" of a meeting is settled (tau) or unbalanced (he). By accessing this heart knowledge, they can speak the specific words that restore the mauri of the situation and bring everyone back into alignment with the Source. We are learning to listen to the "quiet voice" that speaks from the ngākau to guide our waka toward the shore of full light.
The Humble Reception
Yeshua often spoke about how true wisdom is not found by those who think they are the most clever, but by those who come with a humble and open heart. He thanked the Father for revealing the deep things of the Spirit to the "small" ones who were ready to listen.
"At that time Jesus answered and said, 'I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes.'" (Matthew 11:25 NKJV)
"I taua wa ka oho a Ihu, ka mea, Ka whakawhetai atu ahau ki a koe, e Pa, e te Ariki o te rangi, o te whenua, no te mea kua huna e koe enei mea i te hunga whakaaro nui, i te hunga mohio, a whakapuakina ana ki nga mea nonohi." (Matiu 11:25)
When we value mātauranga as a spiritual gift, we are choosing to be those "babes" who are willing to be taught by Wairua Tapu. We are realising that our true strength is not in our own intellect, but in our connection to the heart of God. Let us prioritise this heart knowledge as we navigate the complexities of life in Taitokerau, trusting that the way through will always be revealed to those who seek it with a settled spirit.
