TĀIKI E #117 - INOI AND KARAKIA: THE TWO POWERFUL STREAMS OF FAITH
Two Distinct Streams
Kia ora e te whānau. Here in Taitokerau, we are on a long-term journey to fix the soil of our communities and build a better society. To achieve this holistic well-being, we must understand the spiritual blueprints left for us. A common point of confusion in our daily mahi is the difference between inoi and karakia. Many people treat them as interchangeable words for prayer, but when we look closely at our linguistic history and the translation architecture of the 1868 Paipera Tapu, we see they represent two completely different streams of spiritual reality designed to work in perfect harmony. I too previously confused these terms in my earlier writing, lumping them together under the broad umbrella of prayer. Following some valuable feedback, I’ve researched and reflected on the true architectural blueprints of our language, and will do my best to use the terms correctly in future.
Long before the gospel came to our shores, our ancestors practised karakia. It was a foundational part of life, a way of interacting with the spiritual forces and the mauri, or life force, of the environment. When the early missionaries arrived, they used existing words to map out scriptural truths. The core concept of karakia was never a pagan mistake that needed to be discarded, it actually reflects a profound, active spiritual technology that has been recorded in the Bible since the very beginning of time.
TAIKI E! #116 - THE PROTOCOL OF KARAKIA: HONOURING REGENTS WITHOUT LOSING THE SOURCE
A Heartfelt Question
Kia ora e te whānau. This one is dedicated to my Mum. Recently, an important question was raised that many of us in Taitokerau have wrestled with: Does including the Atua Māori in our karakia turn our backs on the Creator? To answer this, we need to look past the heavy-handed religious rules we’ve often been given and tune back into the original frequency of our ancestors and the unedited scriptures. When we look at the mechanics of the "Woven Universe," we see a beautiful, organised system where everything has its place. It isn’t about "right or wrong" rules; it’s about your intention and where you place your focus.
The Law of the Source
The foundation of the Covenant (Kawenata) is that there is only one Pure Source, Io-Matua-Kore. The first priority of the house is simply to stay connected to this Source. He is the "Alpha Frequency." When we acknowledge that everything comes from the same Father, we aren't creating division; we are acknowledging the truth of the weave.
TAIKI E! #115 - SPEAKING LIFE INTO REALITY: THE POWER OF KARAKIA AND MAHI
The Power of Proclamation
In Te Ao Māori, we understand that language is a gift from God, used to express His glory. To "claim" a divine promise, we must first speak it into existence. This is the heart of karakia. While traditional karakia were formulaic chants, our Christian karakia are petitions to a gracious God, a primary way of communicating with the Atua. We use te reo Māori because its soft and flowing nature facilitates a deep communion with the Spirit.
Kia ora e te whānau. It is time to get practical about how we walk out these ancient truths in our daily lives. We have looked at the 81 books of the Ethiopian canon and seen how they mirror our own history, but the real wero is how we bring those promises from the page into our homes, our marae, and our whenua.
A Fence of Life
Karakia should be constant, early in the morning, before our meals, and during our mahi. It acts as a "fence of life" that protects our house and our soul from the hardships brought by the enemy. When we finish a karakia with words like "Tūturu ka whakamaua kia tina, tina! Haumi e, hui e, tāiki e!" we are not just being poetic. We are "fixing" the promise into our reality, sealing the word so it becomes a firm foundation for our lives.
TĀIKI E! #109 - COLLECTIVE AGREEMENT: THE STRENGTH OF THE WHĀNAU’S VOICE
Power In Our Unity
In this series, we have looked at how an individual can use their heart and voice to navigate Te Ara Wairua, the Spirit Path. But as powerful as one person can be, our tūpuna knew that the real strength lies in the collective. There is a specific kind of spiritual reality that happens when a whānau or a community aligns their intent. When we stand together in agreement, our voices do not just add up, they multiply.
When a group of people focuses on the same life-giving outcome, the ripples they send along the path combine. They become a massive wave of energy rather than just a few small splashes. This collective focus makes it much easier to clear away spiritual noise and bring the pattern of Mauri Ora into our physical reality. A united whānau has a deep strength that can overcome challenges no single person could handle alone.
Ihu As Our Anchor
The hardest part of collective agreement is getting everyone on the same page. We all have different backgrounds, worries, and ideas. This is why Ihu (Yeshua's name in the Paipera Tapu) is the essential foundation that holds us together. He provides the shared frequency that allows us to unite without losing our unique identities.
TĀIKI E! #105 - THE BREATH OF LIFE: CONNECTING TO THE SOURCE OF POWER
The Spiritual Fuel
We have spent time mapping out Te Ara Wairua, the Spirit Path, and learning how our focused intent and spoken words begin to reshape our reality. But if we are being completely honest, even the most advanced machine will not move an inch without a functional engine, and an engine is useless without a direct source of power. In the traditional teachings of the Whare Wānanga, this vital power is known as the Hā, the sacred breath of life.
The Hā is the essential spiritual electricity that flows continuously from the Creator to give life, movement, and purpose to everything within our woven universe. Without this living current flowing through us, the words we speak during Karakia become nothing more than empty, poetic sounds, and our best intentions are reduced to mere wishful thinking. To create real, lasting change across Taitokerau, we must learn how to keep our spiritual connection fully charged.
Plugging into the Source
Imagine a massive, infinite power plant that never runs out of energy, no matter how much demand is placed on it. In our traditional knowledge, this is Io-Matua-Kore, the ultimate Source of all that exists. Te Ara Wairua operates like the high-voltage power lines that are designed to transmit this boundless energy directly into our physical world. However, those lines are only useful if we maintain a secure, unbroken connection at our end.
TĀIKI E! #104 - CHOOSING THE OUTCOME: MOVING FROM POSSIBILITIES TO RESULTS
The World of Maybes
Before any event or situation takes concrete form in our physical world, it exists in a state of pure potential. Our tūpuna deeply understood this concept, identifying this realm of endless options and unformed realities as Te Kore, the place of potentiality where everything is still a "maybe." In our everyday lives here in Taitokerau, we encounter this constantly. Every single problem, challenge, or social wero we face is not a fixed, unchangeable trap. Instead, it is a cloud of completely different potential outcomes just waiting for a clear direction.
When we look at the struggles facing our whānau, it is easy to view them as permanent. But when we view reality through Te Ara Wairua, the Spirit Path, we realise that nothing is set in stone. The future of our communities is fluid, and the choices we make in the spiritual realm determine what eventually grows in the physical soil.
Power of the Choice
Karakia is the precise tool provided to us by the Creator to select the right outcome from that cloud of possibilities. When we combine our focused intent with our spoken words, we are not just wishing or hoping that things might get better by chance. We are using our God-given spiritual authority to "freeze" one specific, life-giving result into our physical reality. We are actively declaring, "Out of all the negative paths that could happen, this is the exact outcome we are bringing into the light."
TĀIKI E! #102 - THE POWER OF INTENT: HOW OUR FOCUS SHAPES REALITY
The Fuel of Life
In our opening discussion, we mapped out Te Ara Wairua, the Spirit Path that weaves through our lives and links us straight to the Source. Today, we need to talk about the fuel that actually moves our karakia (prayers) along that path. That fuel is intent. Our tūpuna deeply understood that when we engage in karakia, the words coming out of our mouths are only half the story. The real weight, the real driving force, comes from the raw focus and honesty held deep within our hearts.
Think of your personal intent as a powerful spotlight in the dark. Wherever you choose to point that spotlight is exactly where the spiritual energy of Te Ara Wairua begins to gather and build. It is a universal truth of our human design that where the heart goes, the power naturally follows. This is why we must become highly intentional about where we direct our daily attention, ensuring we are building up our communities rather than feeding into fear.
Settle the Scattered Heart
The real wero, or challenge, we face in modern times is the problem of a scattered mind. For many of us, our thoughts operate like a leaky bucket. We constantly jump from one anxiety to another, worried about the future, stressed about bills, or caught up in the latest political BS. When our focus is split into so many different directions at once, the spiritual signal we send out becomes weak, blurry, and completely ineffective. It is like trying to navigate a forest path with a torch whose batteries are dying. You cannot see the path clearly, and you certainly cannot lead anyone else toward safety.
TĀIKI E! #101 - TĀIKI E! THE SPIRIT PATH: AN INTRODUCTION TO TE ARA WAIRUA
The Unseen Connection
When we look out across the beautiful landscapes of Taitokerau, it is easy to focus only on what our physical eyes can see. But our tūpuna always knew that the material world is just one part of the story. Beneath the surface of our daily lives runs Te Ara Wairua, the Spirit Path. This is the invisible road that connects our human spirit directly to the Source of all life, guided by Christian faith and Wairua Tapu.
This path is not a distant, abstract concept. It is the real bridge between the realm of infinite possibilities and the physical world where we live, breathe, and mahi. Here in the North, we are realising that true well-being must start within this spiritual foundation. When we focus on the spiritual health of our whānau, we are investing in a long-term return for our entire community, ensuring that our environment and people thrive together.
The Tool of Karakia
Every time we raise our voices in Karakia, or even when we hold a deep, quiet focus within our hearts, we are actively stepping onto this Spirit Path. Karakia is a universal technology of the spirit. It is an open channel designed to help us send an intentional signal from our inner world into the outer world, shaping the environment around us. It is a gift given to all of humankind, allowing us to bring order, peace, and life to our doorsteps.
