THE PURE SOURCE #148 - RECLAIMING SOPHIA: THE FEMININE DIMENSION OF SACRED WISDOM

The forgotten balance

When we look at the state of our communities today, it is clear that something is deeply out of alignment. For generations, the dominant systems built around us have operated with a heavy, one-sided focus. They have prioritised constant extraction, competition, and control. This is what happens when a society cuts itself off from the nurturing, protective side of the Divine. In this post, we are talking about reclaiming Sophia - one of the ancient names for the feminine dimension of sacred wisdom - and understanding why restoring this spiritual balance is essential for healing our relationship with the land and our whānau.

The maternal breath

As Tāngata whenua in Taitokerau, we have always understood that the earth is not a piece of property to be bought and sold. She is Papatūānuku, a mother who feeds us and sustains our life force. This matches perfectly with the deep layers of the ancient scriptures preserved by our brothers and sisters in the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition. In their ancient books, divine wisdom is not described as a cold, distant set of laws, but as a living, breathing feminine presence that wraps around the entire creation like a protective blanket.

Wisdom from ancient books

To see this clearly, we look to the ancient Ge'ez books that have bypassed Western interpretations, showing us the true, protective nature of this spirit.

"I came out of the mouth of the most High, and covered the earth as a mist." - Sirach 24:3 (Ethiopian Orthodox Bible)

አንሰ፡ እምአፈ፡ ልዑል፡ ወፃእኩ፡ ወከደንክዋ፡ ለምድር፡ ከመ፡ ጊሜ። - Ge’ez text

“I puta mai ahau i te māngai o te Runga Rawa, ā, ka kapi i ahau te whenua anō he kohu.” - Translated directly from Ge’ez

A teaching from Ihu

This sacred wisdom is meant to show herself through the actual life and actions of the people, producing fruit that heals the community. This is exactly what Ihu (Yeshua's name in the Paipera Tapu) pointed to when confronting the rigid, critical religious leaders of his day, reminding them that true divine wisdom is visible through what she creates.

"But wisdom is justified by her children" - Matthew 11:19 (Ethiopian Orthodox Bible)

ወተጸድቀት፡ ጥበብ፡ እምውሉዳ። - Ge’ez text

“Ā, kua whakatikaia te whakaaro nui e āna tamariki.” - A teaching from Ihu, translated directly from Ge’ez

Fixing the soil together

When Ihu spoke these words, the lesson was clear: you judge the source by the results it produces in the real world. The colonial mindset brought an aggressive masculine imbalance that viewed our native forests and streams as items for exploitation. It created a "taker culture" that drains our local wealth, leaving our people to struggle. Reclaiming the nurturing spirit of Sophia means shifting our focus entirely. It means we stop measuring success by financial growth alone, and start focusing on how the pie is shared, treating social investment as a long-term return for our community.

Grassroots community agency

Real progress cannot be handed down to us by central government departments or distant district councils. It is a collective responsibility that rests upon our whānau, our hapū, and our local businesses to fix the soil and address the root causes of our struggles. By restoring the balance between the masculine strength of protection and the feminine wisdom of nurturing, we create a safe space where our people can grow. We move away from the broken, leaky systems of the past and return to the safety of the Economic Pā, where our wealth, our care, and our mahi are kept local.

A shining light

By creating a movement of compassion and sustainability here in the North that proves humanity can live together in genuine peace, just as we were meant to from the very beginning. Guided by our faith and the gentle leading of Wairua Tapu, we are building a society where holistic well-being and the environment are prioritised. When we lift up this balanced, sacred wisdom, Taitokerau will stand as a shining light to the rest of the world, demonstrating the true meaning of love, peace, and goodwill to all humankind.
