THE PURE SOURCE #149 - CURES FOR EXTRACTION: HEALING THE CRISIS OF MASCULINE IMBALANCE

Facing the hard truth

When we look closely at the challenges facing our communities here in Taitokerau, we have to be completely candid about the root causes. The modern world is suffering from a deep, aggressive imbalance. For centuries, colonial systems have forced a rigid way of thinking onto our people, one that prioritises unchecked economic growth over the health of our whānau and the environment. This is a purely extractive mindset, an aggressive masculine ego that views the natural world as a warehouse of resources to be owned and used up, rather than a living relative to be protected.

This "taker culture" has created a massive social divide. It focuses entirely on hoarding wealth for a select few while ignoring how the pie is shared across the wider community. Here in the North, we see the results of this political BS every single day in our deforested hills, our polluted rivers, and the economic struggles of our families. This aggressive posturing has broken the natural harmony, and it is a spiritual crisis that requires an urgent spiritual response.

The scriptural diagnosis

To heal this wound, we must look to the direct teachings of Ihu (Yeshua's name in the Paipera Tapu), who stood firmly against the greedy, extractive rulers of his time, warning humanity about the danger of letting material desire control our hearts.

"Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses." - Luke 12:15 (Ethiopian Orthodox Bible)

Deconstructing the taker mindset

This clear guidance shows us that real wealth is never found in what we can take, but in how we care for the collective life force around us. The aggressive colonial model has left a deep scar on our collective mind, convincing people that safety comes from competition and dominance. This worldview has minimised the role of community care and silenced the nurturing wisdom that our ancestors used to keep our society healthy. To reverse this damage, we must take up the collective responsibility of fixing the soil from the ground up.

We cannot sit around waiting for centralised government departments or distant district councils to change this broken system. True progress has always come from the agency of our own whānau, hapū, and marae. We must actively dismantle these extractive habits in our daily lives and our local businesses, replacing them with a long-term focus on social investment. When we view community care as a genuine return on investment, we create a supportive environment where our people can finally step out of survival mode.

Restoring the balance

Curing the crisis of extraction is about returning to a state of complete balance. Guided by our faith and the gentle strength of Wairua Tapu, we are called to bring the masculine energy of protection back into harmony with the feminine wisdom of nurturing. This means building a society that values universal humanity, treating every person as an equal member of one human race. It means transforming our local economy into a space of safety and abundance, where our hard work and resources are kept local to sustain our own people.

As tangata whenua, born and raised in the North, I hold the firm conviction that Taitokerau will lead the transition to a better society. We have the ancestral intelligence and the spiritual grounding needed to prove that people can live together in genuine peace and sustainability. By refusing to participate in the broken ways of exploitation, and choosing instead a path of love and goodwill, the North will stand tall as a shining light to the rest of the world.
