THE PURE SOURCE #150 - THE ECONOMIC PĀ: BUILDING SYSTEMS THAT PROTECT OUR MAURI

Moving to practical action

For a long time, we have talked about spiritual awakening and reclaiming our identity as Tāngata whenua here in Taitokerau. But true faith cannot just sit in our hearts or be spoken inside the walls of a church, it must show itself in how we live, work, and care for one another. In this post, we are moving from spiritual theory to practical action. We are discussing the design of the Economic Pā, a local economic model built to preserve our collective life force and protect the mauri of our communities.

The baseline of equity

The corporate systems surrounding us are built on a single, aggressive motive: unchecked financial growth. This model does not care about people, and it does not care about the land. It is focused entirely on how much can be taken out. Our philosophy turns this completely on its head, focusing instead on how the pie is shared. We view social investment in our people, our youth, and our housing not as a cost, but as a long-term return on investment for the entire community.

Ancient paths of provision

When we look into the ancient texts of the Ethiopian Orthodox tradition, we find that a healthy community is always one that protects its resources and prioritises the care of the collective over individual greed.

"Lay up your treasure according to the commandments of the Most High, and it shall bring you more profit than gold." - Sirach 29:11 (Ethiopian Orthodox Bible)

A teaching from Ihu

This model of circular care and local protection is exactly what was shown to us by Ihu (Yeshua's name in the Paipera Tapu), who taught that true abundance returns to us when we focus on open, honest generosity within our communities.

"Give, and it will be given to you; a good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom." - Luke 6:38 (Ethiopian Orthodox Bible)

Ge’ez text:ሀቡ፡ ወይገንዩ፡ ለክሙ።

Te Reo Māori, translated directly from Ge’ez:  Homai, ā, ka homai anō ki a koutou; he mehua pai, e tanaia ana, e rorororotia ana, e puhake ana, ka homai ki tō koutou uma.”

Stopping the community leaks

Currently, our region operates like a vessel with holes in the bottom. Our people work hard, our land produces wealth, but that capital is instantly sucked out by distant banks, multinational supermarkets, and corporate power companies. This is the colonial impact in real-time. Building an Economic Pā means stopping these leaks. It means organising our local businesses, our marae, and our iwi authorities to create closed loops where our money and our mahi circulate among our own whānau before ever leaving the North.

Grassroots collective agency

We cannot sit around waiting for the political system to change itself or for corporate entities to suddenly develop a conscience. Real progress must come from grassroots action. It is up to our hapū, our regional and district councils, and our local innovators to take up this wero. By fixing the soil and addressing the root causes of our economic struggles, we protect our universal humanity, proving that when we focus on peace and love, we can build a society where everyone thrives.
