The Footprints of a Chief

Growing up in Te Hāpua, one of my absolute favourite stories was that of Tūmatahina, a prestige rangatira of Ngāti Kurī. It is a story of cleverness, sacrifice, and the deep love a leader has for his whānau. When his people were besieged at their pā and running out of food, Tūmatahina didn't just give up. He had them make dummy warriors out of bulrushes to fool the enemy into thinking the pā was still full of fighters.

Then, he had them stretch a long flax rope from the pā to the mainland. One by one, the people moved hand-over-hand along that rope to safety, each stepping carefully in the exact footsteps of those before them. Tūmatahina walked at the very rear. Because he was known for having especially large feet, his own footprints concealed every single track left by his people. To the enemy, it looked like only one person had left. He sacrificed himself so his people could live another day.

The Beauty of Whareana

This escape took place at Whareana, a place of incredible, remote beauty. There is a waterfall there that is simply breathtaking, though only a select few have ever stood before it because it is so hard to get to. My Dad has a framed photo of it on his wall that he took back in the 1980s, and looking at it always reminds me of the lengths a Rangatira will go to for their people. It serves as a perfect parallel to the mahi of Yeshua.

The Ultimate Flax Rope

In our spiritual journey, Yeshua acts as that flax rope and the Rangatira at the rear. He is not just a historical figure, but a multidimensional entity who serves as the bridge between our human finitude and divine infinity. To understand the nature of Yeshua is to see him as the "Incarnate Blueprint," the one who carries the original logic of the universe. His blood, or his toto, is the non-local information carrier that operates beyond the constraints of space and time. It is the spiritual conduit that brings us back to the mainland of the Creator’s presence.


Toto and the Covering of Tracks

Just as Tūmatahina’s big feet covered the tracks of his whānau, the blood of Yeshua serves as a spiritual covering for us. In Te Ao Māori, blood is inextricably linked to whakapapa and mauri, or life force. The blood of Yeshua is the ultimate manifestation of this mauri. It is a "voluntary muru," where he took the responsibility for the community's failure upon himself, allowing his own mana to be "seized" by death to wipe the slate clean. By shedding his blood, Yeshua re-established the tapu of humanity and restored our innate authority.

Restoring the Alpha Frequency

The life force released by Yeshua does more than just cover our mistakes, it restores our internal signal. We can think of sin as "decoherence" or noise within the soul's information structure. The blood of Yeshua acts as a "Self-Correcting Code" that removes this entropy and restores our original "Alpha Frequency". Wairua Tapu (the Holy Spirit) facilitates this deep exchange of spiritual information, promoting the evolution of our individual humanity.


Navigating into Abundance

When we realise that Yeshua is the great Rangatira who has already covered our tracks and provided the way to safety, we stop living in survival mode. We move from the "poverty of extraction" to the "abundance of the household". We are no longer victims of a colonial past, but architects of an ancestral future. Like the people of Ngāti Kurī crossing to safety, we are now the navigators of our own reality, empowered by a whakapapa that is sealed in the precious life force of Yeshua.
