ALPHA FREQUENCY #755 - THE ETHICS OF KOHA: GIVING AS COMMUNITY INVESTMENT

Beyond The Transaction

In many Western cultures, giving is often seen as a transaction, a one-way donation where we hand over money or resources to help a cause. We focus on the amount given and the tax receipt we get in return. But when we look at the biblical gift of giving through a Māori lens, it shifts from being a donation to being an act of maintaining whanaungatanga, or deep relationship.

Reframing giving as koha means we are not just giving a "thing", we are releasing a taonga (treasure) that carries our very breath and spirit. This is the ethics of koha, where every gift is an investment in the collective well-being of our people. It is a recognition that the strength of the group is more important than the wealth of any single person.

The Spirit Of The Gift

When Wairua Tapu (the Holy Spirit) imparts the spiritual gift of giving, a person begins to see resources as something held in trust for the iwi (tribe). In our traditional thinking, a gift carries the hau, or the spirit of the giver. This creates a spiritual connection that requires a response. When you give at the Spirit's prompting, you are not just clearing out your bank account; you are participating in a reciprocal flow of divine life.

This flow ensures that no member of the community is left in a state of lack. Because the gift carries your spirit, it binds you to the person receiving it. This isn't about charity from a distance; it is about standing together as one body where the resources of one become the strength of all.

Maintaining Our Connections

In Te Tai Tokerau, our ability to thrive depends on how well we care for our connections. The spiritual gift of giving allows a believer to see needs that others might miss and to release resources to ensure the community stays in balance. This is an act of stewardship over our relationships.

When we give as an act of koha, we are acknowledging that everything we have is actually a taonga tuku iho, a treasure handed down to us to care for. We are simply passing on what was never truly ours to begin with. This removes the pride that often comes with wealth and replaces it with a deep sense of joy in being part of the circle.

Trust As The Bedrock

For the Māori believer, this whole system of giving is built on whakapono, which is our word for faith. But whakapono is more than just a thought in your head; it is a "trust" that is anchored in the authority of God. It is the spiritual bedrock that allows us to stand firm even when things look difficult.

Because we trust in the Source, we can give generously without fear. We know that as we release what we have into the community, we are entering into a partnership with Wairua Tapu, who ensures that the life force of our whānau is always replenished. We give because we are already part of an abundant, woven universe.

The Overflowing Measure

Yeshua taught us that our generosity is the very thing that opens the door for more abundance to flow back into our lives. He showed us that when we give with an open heart, the return is not just equal, but overflowing.

"Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you." (Luke 6:38 NKJV)

"Homai, a ka homai ki a koutou; he mehua pai, e pehia ana, e ngarungaru ana, e puhake ana, ka homai e ratou ki o koutou uma. Ko te mehua hoki e mehua ai koutou, ko te mehua ano ia e mehua ai ki a koutou." (Ruka 6:38)

When we give through the lens of koha, we are practicing this very principle. We are making sure that the "measure" we use for our whānau is one of abundance and love. In doing so, we ensure that the entire region of Taitokerau begins to shine with the light of a community that truly cares for its own.
