ALPHA FREQUENCY #753 - TOHUNGATANGA: PROPHECY AS SPIRITUAL WISDOM

The Voice Of Truth

Prophecy is often misunderstood in the modern world as a kind of spiritual fortune-telling or a way to predict the future like a weather report. However, the biblical term propheteia simply refers to the ability to speak forth God's word with absolute clarity. When we look at this enablement through the lens of Te Ao Māori, it undergoes a powerful transformation, moving from "prediction" to "tohungatanga".

Beyond Predicting Events

In our worldview, this gift is akin to the role of the tohunga, the expert or priest who acts as a medium between the Creator and the people. Reframing prophecy as tohungatanga means it is the act of applying spiritual wisdom to a current situation to ensure the community remains in a state of pono (truth) and tika (righteousness). It is not about guessing what happens next year; it is about speaking the truth that is needed right now.

Restoring Spiritual Balance

The true function of the prophetic gift is to perceive the spiritual climate of our spaces, such as the marae, and speak the word that restores the balance of the mauri. We often sense when a situation or a meeting is he (unbalanced or wrong) or tau (settled and at peace). The person with this gift identifies that imbalance and provides the spiritual insight to bring things back into alignment with the Source.

The Prophetic Tradition

We see this clearly in our history, particularly with the Ringatū movement. For the prophet Te Kooti and his followers, the gift of prophecy was the ability to interpret the biblical stories of exile as a contemporary Māori reality. It wasn't just ancient text; it was a living word that gave the people a "way through" their struggles. It allowed them to navigate turbulent spiritual waters with a clear sense of direction.

Wisdom From The Source

Yeshua promised that when we are called to stand for the truth, we don't need to rely on our own cleverness or prepared scripts. Wairua Tapu (the Holy Spirit) provides the very utterance needed to restore order.

"For I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist." (Luke 21:15 NKJV)

"Maku hoki e hoatu he mangai ki a koutou, he whakaaro nui, e kore e taea te whakakore, te whakaware ranei e o koutou hoariri katoa." (Ruka 21:15)

When we exercise tohungatanga, we are not seeking status or power. We are acting as navigators (kaihautū) who guard the mana of the Gospel and ensure the safety of the whānau. By speaking life and truth, we weave the diverse strengths of our people into a unified whole, moving us all closer to the world of full light.
