TE ŌHANGA MAURI #148 - HEAL THE TAIAO: RESTORING OUR FORESTS AND OCEANS

Tēnā koutou e te whānau. In our previous posts, we have looked at how to build homes, power our lives, and protect our data. But all of these things happen within the embrace of the Taiao, our natural world. Today, we are looking at how we can stop treating our land and sea like a bargain bin and start treating them like the living ancestors they are.

The Problem: Mining the Land and Sea

Currently, our relationship with nature is often built on extraction. In the forest, the system focuses on "clear-felling," cutting down massive areas of pine all at once. This leaves the hillsides bare and vulnerable, which leads to "slash" debris and silt that smothers our rivers and harbours during storms. This is a "Mauri Mate" activity because it leaves the land wounded and the water gasping for air.

In our oceans, we see industrial overfishing and pollution that drains the life force of our moana. The current system treats the Taiao as a separate "thing" to be used up for a quick profit, rather than a vital part of our own household. When the forest is gone and the sea is empty, the "Leaky Bucket" is bone dry. We are left with the environmental mess, while the profits have long since left the North.

The Proposal: Healing the Source

We are proposing a strategy to Heal the Taiao. This is a vision where we move from "taking" to "tending." Instead of treating the North like a quarry, this model suggests we act as Kaitiaki (guardians) to restore the life force of our home. Our proposal includes:

  • Restoring Native Forests: Proposing a massive shift toward replanting our hillsides with native trees, which creates permanent carbon sinks and brings back the birds and the biodiversity.

  • Continuous Cover Forestry: Moving away from clear-felling and toward selective logging, where we only take what we need and keep the forest canopy intact so the soil stays protected.

  • Marine Kaitiakitanga: Supporting local hapū and community-led protection of our oceans, using traditional tools like rāhui (temporary closures) to allow the fish stocks to flourish again.

  • Source to Sea Healing: Proposing a plan to clean our rivers from the mountains to the coast, ensuring that the water flowing into our harbours is pure and full of life.

Restoring the Balance

This strategy isn't just about "conservation," it is about our own survival. When the Taiao is healthy, the whānau is healthy. A thriving forest and a vibrant ocean are the ultimate insurance policy for our future.

Our research in Research Report #230 shows that by "Healing the Taiao," we are actually healing ourselves. We are proposing a future where Taitokerau is famous for its crystal-clear water and its towering, permanent forests. By restoring the balance, we ensure that the life force of our land and sea stays strong for our mokopuna. It is time to stop mining the North and start caring for the roots of our existence.
