TĀIKI E! #110 - STEWARDING THE FIELD: USING KARAKIA TO HEAL THE LAND
The Land Is A Living Field
In our modern world, we often treat the land like a piece of property to buy and sell, or just a resource to be used up until nothing is left. But our tūpuna had a much deeper view. They understood that the environment around us, the soil, the rivers, and the forests, is a living field of life force. Everything in nature has its own mauri, which is its natural life force and vitality. Because we are closely connected to this field through Te Ara Wairua, the Spirit Path, our words and our intentions have a direct, real impact on the health of the land right around us.
When we focus on bringing these healthy patterns down to the ground, we are prioritising the holistic well-being of our environment over simple economic growth, creating a long-term return for everyone in our community. We are not separate from nature, we are completely bound up with it. When the people are hurting, the land suffers, and when the land is neglected, the people feel that heavy weight too. Real progress means fixing the soil and addressing the root causes of stagnation together.
Restoring The Mauri
When a piece of land is mistreated, polluted, or ignored, its mauri becomes sick and drops. The environment loses its natural energy, and it can start to feel spiritually heavy, grey, and tired. As caretakers who live here in Taitokerau, we have been given the grassroots agency and collective responsibility to help restore that life force. We do not have to sit back and wait for top-down government programs to save our environment, we can act right now from the ground up.
