For nearly two centuries, since the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and the subsequent imposition of the colonial estate, the region has been characterized in national economic discourse primarily by its deficits. Statistical analyses consistently highlight low Gross Domestic Product (GDP), high unemployment, significant health disparities, and pervasive social deprivation.
