REFLECTIVE INSIGHTS #065 - THE VISIONARY DAUGHTER: HARIATA RONGO AND THE CONTINUITY OF LIFE

The Strength of the Daughter

When we look at the history of the North, we often focus on the names of the great chiefs who led the battles. But as people born, raised, and living in Taitokerau, we know that the true strength of our people is found in the family lines that keep our spirit alive through generations. Today, we are looking at Hariata Rongo, the visionary daughter of the famous chief Hongi Hika. She lived through times of massive upheaval, war, and change, yet she stood as a pillar of strength. Her life teaches us about continuity, the beautiful truth that no matter how many storms hit our family tree, the life force keeps flowing forward.

Keeping the Flame Alive

Hariata Rongo was not just the daughter of a great leader; she was a powerful leader in her own right. She married the influential chief Hōne Heke, bringing together two incredible family lines of the North. She understood that while a single generation might face wars and political arguments, the real work of a woman is to make sure the family line remains unbroken. She was incredibly practical and filled with foresight. She knew that when a community gets distracted by outside arguments and chaos, it is the quiet strength of the home that keeps the people safe. This ability to protect the family and keep the fire burning mirrors the beautiful pattern of Ihu (Yeshua), who came to give us life, and life in total abundance.

An Unbroken Life Force

In our modern world, we are often told that everything is disposable and that we should only care about the present moment. But the example of Hariata reminds us that we are part of a long, unbroken chain. When we know our roots, we stop living in fear of the future. Ihu taught us that true life does not end when we face hard times or when an old era passes away. His spirit ensures that our true identity and our love for one another will survive any challenge. This is the great promise of life and continuity that guides our journey:

"I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." - Ethiopian Orthodox Bible (John 10:10)

Ge'ez text: አነሰ፡ መጻእኩ፡ ከመ፡ ሕይወተ፡ ይረክቡ፡ ወፈድፋደሰ፡ ይኩናሁ።

Te Reo Māori, Paipera Tapu (1868 translation): "I haere mai hoki ahau kia whiwhi ai rātou ki te ora, kia nui rawa ai hoki tō rātou ora."

Building for the Future Today

To build a better community for our children in Taitokerau, we need to pick up the wisdom of Hariata Rongo. We need to walk away from modern selfishness and the political noise that divides our neighborhoods. Loving our people means focusing heavily on the long-term health of our homes and our marae. Today, this means keeping our resources, our stories, and our support right here at the grassroots level so that the pie is shared fairly among everyone. We must see spending time and money on our young people, our local schools, and our family gardens not as a burden, but as a long-term investment that keeps the North vibrant for generations to come.

Making our towns better places to live means looking after the whole family line rather than just chasing quick individual wins. When we link our older generations with our youth, we are passing down the tools of survival and faith. We do not need outside organisations to tell us how to care for our grandparents or how to raise our tamariki. We already have the abundance, the spirit, and the ancestral intelligence to create a thriving home from the ground up.

A Shining Light Forward

Protecting the continuity of life is the best way to make our communities strong. Guided by faith, love for all people, and the peace of the Holy Spirit, we can rise above our daily worries and take control of our own future. Let us honour the visionary daughters and mothers of our past by standing firm in our family roots, protecting our children, and building a fair, peaceful society. The North has always been meant to lead the way, standing as a shining light of hope and life to the rest of the world. By grounding our modern work in the deep wisdom of our matriarchs, we ensure that the spirit of our people stays strong forever.
