REFLECTIVE INSIGHT #017 - THE GUESTS IN OUR HOUSE - BUILDING ZION TOGETHER
The Afternoon Sun In Maungatapere
The afternoon sun is baking the volcanic stones and warming the kiwifruit orchards here in Maungatapere. Looking out over the land, I’m reminded of what Reverend Māori Marsden called the "Woven Universe"—a reality where everything is a process of interconnected threads rather than a collection of separate things. If we are to transition Te Tai Tokerau from the extractive "Babylon" to the regenerative "Zion," we must understand how every person living here—tāngata whenua, tāngata Tiriti, and our new immigrant whānau—fits into that fabric.
For too long, the "Babylonian" operating system has relied on the "Newtonian Error". This is the bad explanation that views the universe as a clockwork mechanism made of separate, isolated parts. In our community, this manifests as the "Rational Individual," an atomised agent seeking to maximise their own utility at the expense of the collective Mauri. But modern physics and ancient Mātauranga agree: separation is an illusion.
Whanaungatanga As Quantum Entanglement
In the Quantum Whakapapa Nexus, we recognise Whanaungatanga as literal Quantum Entanglement. When tāngata Tiriti or immigrants move to the North, they are not just "units of labour" or "consumers"; they become entangled with the life force of this whenua. Their skills, their capital, and their presence become part of the local energetic field.
Zion is not an exclusive club; it is the restoration of "Ekonomia"—the management of the household for the well-being of all its members10. In this household, tāngata whenua hold the ancestral keys, but our guests have a vital role as "Universal Constructors". David Deutsch argues that if a problem is not forbidden by the laws of physics, it is soluble given the right knowledge. When Pākehā engineers at our innovation parks or immigrant families in our orchards apply their knowledge to enhance the Mauri of the land, they are helping us build the "Economic Pā".
The Algorithm Of Life
We must stop measuring our community by the "Babylonian" metric of GDP, which only tracks the accumulation of money (Chrematistics). Instead, we adopt the Mauri Model as our primary algorithm. Whether you are a descendant of the 1835 signatories or a new arrival, your contribution is measured by whether it results in "Mauri Ora" (+2)—restoring and enhancing the environmental, cultural, social, and economic health of our household. When we processed local timber or invest in whenua-based assets like the orchards here in Maungatapere, we are keeping the "embodied energy" within our region and building a negentropic future.
Reclaiming Our Shared Household
If you are tāngata Tiriti or a newcomer to the North, I challenge you to look at your business or your mahi through the lens of the Mauri Model this week. Ask yourself: Is my presence here increasing the order and life force of this place, or am I part of the "Leaky Bucket" that exports our wealth? Zion is a shared vision, and it’s time we all started acting like the entangled whānau we are.
