REFLECTIVE INSIGHT #017 - THE GUESTS IN OUR HOUSE: BUILDING TE ŌHANGA MAURI TOGETHER

Sunlight in Maungatapere

The afternoon sun is baking the volcanic stones and warming the kiwifruit orchards here in Maungatapere. Looking out over this land, I am reminded of what Rev. Māori Marsden called the "Woven Universe." This is a reality where everything is a process of connected threads rather than a collection of separate things. If we are to move Te Tai Tokerau away from a system that just takes and toward a place where life flourishes, we must understand how every person living here, whether they are Tāngata Whenua, Tāngata Tiriti, or new immigrants, fits into that fabric.

The Machine Error

For too long, the broken system we live in has relied on a major mistake. It views the universe like a cold machine made of isolated parts that don't really need each other. In our community, this shows up when we think of ourselves as separate individuals only looking out for ourselves. But modern science and ancient wisdom both tell us the same thing: separation is an illusion. We are all part of the same mauri (life force) that flows through this land. When one part of our community suffers, we all feel the leak.

Entangled Lives

In the North, we recognize Whanaungatanga as a law of nature. When new neighbors or workers move to our region, they aren't just "units of labor" or "consumers." They become entangled with the life force of this land. Their skills, their heart, and their presence become part of our local energy field. Whether you have been here for five generations or five months, you are now a thread in the Northland cloak. We cannot thrive if we stay in our separate corners; we must weave our strengths together.

Building the Economic Pā

The transition to Te Ōhanga Mauri, the economy of life force, cannot happen if we keep acting like we are separate. We must stop the "leaky bucket" that drains our wealth and talent away to the big cities. To do this, we are building the "Economic Pā." This is a place where we keep our resources circulating locally to benefit everyone who calls the North home. When a local business in Maungatapere thrives, it should lift the mauri of the whole hapū and the whole town.

The Connection to the Source

This deep connection is a spiritual truth. Ihu (Yeshua’s name in the Paipera Tapu) used the image of a vine to show that we only thrive when we stay connected to the Source and to each other.

"I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." Ethiopian Orthodox Bible (John 15:5)

Original Ge'ez Text:

Direct Ge'ez to Te Reo Māori Translation: Ko ahau te wāina, ko koutou ngā manga; ko te tangata e noho ana i roto i ahau, me ahau hoki i roto i a ia, ka whai hua nui; nō te mea ki te kore ahau e taea e koutou te mahi i tētahi mea.

Weavers of the Cloak

If you are Tāngata Tiriti or a new immigrant, your knowledge and your heart are the "software" that helps our region run. When you prioritize the health of the community and the environment over a quick profit, you are no longer just a guest. You are a weaver of the cloak. The Economic Pā is big enough for everyone who is ready to believe in abundance. Let’s stop acting like separate particles and start realizing the power of our connection. When we fix the soil together, the North becomes a shining light for the rest of the world.
