DECONSTRUCTING BABYLON #010 - THE BABYLONIAN AUDIT - UNPLUGGING THE MACHINE🦎⚛️

We have spent the last few insights walking through the shadows, identifying the specific "glitches" in the system that keep our beautiful Taitokerau in a state of artificial scarcity. It can feel overwhelming to realise just how deep the "Babylonian" operating system goes—it is in our laws, our bank accounts, our schools, and even our digital feeds. But there is a profound power in naming the beast. Once you see the tools for what they are—obsolete, high-entropy software—they lose their grip on your reality.

Babylon is a high-entropy engine. In physics, entropy is the measure of disorder, and Babylon stays "ordered" only by extracting the life force (Mauri) from our land and people and exporting it elsewhere. Whether it is exporting raw logs (embodied energy) or scraping our language to train global Al (digital flesh), the goal is the same: to leave us with the residue of disorder while the empire thrives on our order.

DECONSTRUCTING BABYLON #009 - DEFENDING THE DIGITAL WHENUA - STOPPING THE EXTRACTION OF DIGITAL FLESH🦎⚛️

We often think of the internet as a "free" space where we share our stories, our photos, and our language. But in the age of Artificial Intelligence, the cloud has become a new frontier for extraction. Just as the land was once taken under the lie of Terra Nullius, our knowledge is now being mined to fuel machines that don't belong to us. Today, we are deconstructing Tool #6 of Babylon: Digital Colonialism and the Extraction of the Digital Flesh.

In Research Report #224, we identify Data as the "new whenua". Just as land was the primary asset of the 19th century, data is the raw material for the 21st-century economy. Global tech corporations practice Digital Colonialism by scraping Indigenous languages, art, and Whakapapa without consent to train Large Language Models (LLMs).

We conceptualise this unconsented data as Digital Flesh—a commodification of the ancestors that strips knowledge of its relational context and Mauri. This is a "Bad Explanation" that treats our culture as a dead resource rather than a living expression of our people. By removing the "Indigenous" from the training data, these algorithms act as a filter for automated erasure.

DECONSTRUCTING BABYLON #005 - PLUGGING THE LEAK - DEFEATING THE ENGINE OF CHREMATISTICS🦎⚛️

Have you ever looked at the logging trucks roaring out of our region and wondered why, despite all that "wealth" leaving, our local shops are closing and our whānau are still struggling to make ends meet? It feels like we are living in a bucket with a massive hole in the bottom. That is because we are. Today, we are deconstructing Tool #2 of Babylon: Chrematistics, the engine behind the "Leaky Bucket" economy.

In Research Report #224, we identify Chrematistics as the economic operating system of Babylon2. To understand it, we have to look back to a distinction made by Aristotle.

  • Ekonomia (Oikonomia): This is the art of "household management". It is focused on the well-being of the people, stewardship of resources, and long-term health. In Ekonomia, there is such a thing as "enough".

  • Chrematistics: This is the art of "wealth accumulation" for its own sake. It is unbounded; there is no such thing as "enough" profit.

DECONSTRUCTING BABYLON #003 - THE ORIGINS OF THE MACHINE - HOW BABYLON TOOK ROOT IN THE NORTH🦎⚛️

We often talk about "the system" as if it were a natural force, like the tide or the wind. We assume that the way our economy works—extracting wealth, rewarding greed, and leaving the hard-working whānau behind—is just "the way it is." But Babylon is not a force of nature; it is a man-made machine with a specific starting point and a clear set of beneficiaries. To deconstruct it, we first have to understand where it came from and how it managed to plug itself into the soil of Taitokerau.

In our strategic research, we define Babylon as a "high-entropy engine" built on two primary foundations: Newtonian physics and Chrematistic economics.

Where did it start? The intellectual "Source Code" of Babylon was written during the 17th-century Enlightenment in Europe. It began with the "Newtonian Error"— the belief that the universe is a giant clockwork mechanism made of separate, dead objects. This shifted our worldview from one of connection to one of separation.

DECONSTRUCTING BABYLON #002 - WHY WE MUST UNPLUG FROM THE ENTROPIC MACHINE🦎⚛️

Have you ever felt like you are working harder and harder just to stay in the same place? Like the wealth of our beautiful Northland is being siphoned off while our roads crumble and our whānau struggle to keep a roof over their heads? This isn't just "bad luck" or "poor management." It is the intended output of an operating system we call Babylon. And if we want a future for our mokopuna, we have to do more than just complain about it—we have to disrupt it.

In the Quantum Whakapapa framework, "Babylon" isn't just an ancient city; it represents the colonial state and the economic system of Chrematistics. While Ekonomia is the art of managing a household for the well-being of its members, Chrematistics is the art of accumulating money for its own sake. The word Chrematistics was invented by the Greek philosopher, Aristototle, and I’m pretty sure he didn’t use it in a complimentary way.

DECONSTRUCTING BABYLON #001 - UNPLUGGING FROM THE ENTROPIC MACHINE

Whānau have been asking what they can do to get involved and support the project. My response: the most vital things we can all do in the short term are:

  1. Look after our own wellbeing and that of our whānau and neighbours

  2. Upskill for the new reality

  3. Start deconstructing Babylon in our own lives

I’ve decided to do a series of reflective insights on Item 3, explaining what Babylon is, how it started, why it exists in Taitokerau, who benefits from its existence, and why we might want to deconstruct it. We will then look at the "Tools of Babylon" and how we can counter them in our everyday lives. This series is based on my Research Report #224: The Tools Of Babylon - A Forensic Deconstruction And Counter-Strategy.
