COMMUNITY PROJECT #425 - BLESS A WHĀNAU
Mission Statement
To restore the mana and mauri of our community by providing intensive, wraparound support to one whānau at a time, ensuring they transition from survival to a state of abundance where they can eventually bless others.
The Needs Assessment
In Te Tai Tokerau, many whānau are trapped in a high-entropy state of survival. This is the "Leaky Bucket" in action—where limited resources are immediately drained by high costs of living, poor housing, and lack of support networks. When a whānau is in "survival mode," they cannot contribute to the collective. We see similar, highly successful models in Jewish Tzedakah traditions and Indian community Seva networks, where communal pooling of resources ensures no member remains in poverty. By focusing on one whānau at a time, we stop the "scattergun" approach to charity and create deep, permanent change.
Core Objectives
Achieve Basic Needs Sovereignty: Ensure the selected whānau has a dry, warm home, food security, and reliable transport within 90 days.
Establish Wraparound Connection: Link the whānau with 3–5 "Awhi Mentors" to assist with financial literacy, health navigation, and education.
Foster Reciprocity: Graduate whānau into the "Blessing Pool" where they contribute time or resources to the next selected whānau.
Scalable Restoration: Complete the full "blessing cycle" for four whānau in the first year.
Stakeholder Map
Local Iwi and Hapū: To ensure the process is grounded in tikanga and reaches those most in need.
Skilled Tradespeople: Local builders, mechanics, and electricians willing to donate or discount their mahi.
Community Donors: Individuals and businesses contributing to the "Blessing Fund."
Social Services: Government and NGO partners to align existing entitlements with the project's intensive support.
The "Impact" Model
This initiative is powered by Social Negentropy. Instead of relying on external grants that create dependency, we utilise the Ekonomia model of household management. Sustainability is built through the "pay-it-forward" mechanism. As each whānau finds their feet, they become donors and volunteers. The initial "seed" resources are gathered through local crowdfunding and business partnerships, treating the investment as a way to "fix the soil" of our community rather than just a one-off handout.
Engagement Strategy
We will launch via Marae-based wānanga and social media to call for nominations. Transparency is key; we will share the journey of the blessing (while protecting the whānau’s privacy and dignity) to show the community the tangible ROI of their generosity. Town hall meetings will be held to invite local businesses to become "Blessing Partners."
Resource Requirements
The Blessing Fund: An initial pool of capital for emergency repairs or debt consolidation.
Awhi Headquarters: A small office or space within a local community hub.
Transport & Logistics: A reliable vehicle for moving donated goods and furniture.
Digital Platform: A simple app or website to coordinate volunteer tasks and track the "Blessing Loop."
Timeline of Action
Week 1: Establish the Governance Committee and define the criteria for the first "Blessing Selection."
Week 2: Launch the community "Call for Abundance" to gather initial funds and volunteer commitments.
Week 3: Review nominations and conduct "Kanohi ki te Kanohi" (face-to-face) interviews with potential whānau.
Week 4: Announce the first project and commence the 90-day intensive wraparound support.
Mauri Model Assessment
Te Taiao (Environment): +2 Mauri Ora. By retrofitting damp homes and improving waste management for the whānau, we reduce the ecological footprint of the household.
Te Ahurea (Culture): +2 Mauri Ora. This project operationalises manaakitanga and whanaungatanga in a modern context, proving that our ancient ways are the solution to modern poverty.
Te Tangata (Social): +2 Mauri Ora. The focus on intensive connection eliminates the isolation of "survival mode" and creates a resilient mesh network of supported families.
Te Pūtea (Economic): +2 Mauri Ora. It plugs the "Leaky Bucket" by clearing high-interest debt and building financial literacy, moving capital from extraction to circulation.
