The New Colonial Frontier

In earlier centuries, colonial powers invaded physical land, claimed it was empty territory (Terra Nullius), and extracted natural resources without permission. Today, as physical resources become scarcer, the Babylonian machine has created a new frontier for extraction: Digital Colonialism.

In the modern digital world, large technology and artificial intelligence corporations treat the internet as "Digital Terra Nullius", a wild, empty space where they feel entitled to take whatever they want. Automated software tools constantly scrape public social media posts, recorded community discussions, video interviews, family photographs, and traditional genealogies (whakapapa).

The Theft of Digital Flesh

This practice steals what we call "Digital Flesh", the unique cultural life force, language nuances, and living knowledge of indigenous and rural communities. Tech corporations feed this stolen data into commercial AI models to build software products that generate billions of dollars in profit.

In the process, our sacred stories, traditional medical knowledge, and family histories are stripped of their sacred context. They are misinterpreted by computer algorithms and sold back to us as corporate tools. This modern extraction treats our collective intellect and spirit as raw material, just like traditional colonial practices treated our land.

Indigenous Data Sovereignty

Securing our future requires establishing Indigenous Data Sovereignty. We must treat our digital data with the same care, respect, and protection that we give to our physical land. Communities must build their own secure digital archives governed strictly by traditional cultural rules (tikanga).

Instead of allowing foreign tech giants to profit from our knowledge, we can design our own localised digital tools. These tools can preserve our language, protect our family records, and help our leaders solve real-world community problems without ever handing our cultural heritage over to outside machines.

I hold a firm conviction that Taitokerau will lead the transition to a better society. Guided by Wairua Tapu and a commitment to peace, love, and goodwill, we know that true progress will not come from distant institutions. It comes from grassroots agency, from our whānau, hapū, and local businesses taking collective responsibility to protect our data, honour our stories, and secure our future.
