THE WOVEN UNIVERSE #904 - THE BINDING FORCE: MAURI AS THE UNIVERSAL CARRIER OF INFORMATION
The Breath of Creation
When our tūpuna were trained in the Whare Wānanga of Te Tai Tokerau, they learned that the world isn't held together by accident. Rev. Māori Marsden was taught that there is a specific binding force that keeps everything connected. He called this Mauri. While many people just think of it as "life force," Marsden saw something much deeper. He saw it as the Hā, or the breath of life, that carries messages from the unseen world into the world we can see and touch.
Mauri as a Message
In our way of thinking, Mauri acts a lot like a radio wave. A radio wave isn't just energy, it carries a song or a voice. In the same way, Mauri carries the "source code" or the instructions from the Creator into the physical world. It is the reason a seed knows how to become a kauri tree and not a blade of grass. It is the force that creates order out of chaos. Without this constant flow of information, the Woven Universe would simply fall apart.
Order Over Decay
In the world of science, things usually tend to break down and get messy over time. But Mauri does the opposite. It is the energy that builds, organises, and brings life. It is the engine that keeps our bodies, our land, and our water in a state of living potential. When we talk about Mauri, we are talking about the "software" that keeps the "hardware" of the universe running smoothly. This is why we must be so careful about how we treat the environment, we are managing the very threads of life.
The Scale of Life
Marsden taught that Mauri isn't just "on" or "off." It exists on a scale. We can either build it up or wear it down.
Mauri Ora: This is when the life force is flourishing. The messages are clear, the energy is high, and everything is full of vitality.
Mauri Mate: This is when the connection is blocked. Things begin to break down, get sick, or lose their way.
As Navigators in the North, our main job is to move our whānau and our environment toward Mauri Ora. We have the authority to help fix the soil and clear the blockages so the life force can flow again.
The Source of the Signal
Marsden was very clear that Mauri isn't some independent magic. It is a power that is given and sustained by Ihu (Yeshua's name in the Paipera Tapu). He is the central point of the Woven Universe. He provides the high-fidelity signal that Mauri carries into every cell and every star. When we align our lives with Him, we are plugging back into the original power supply. This ensures that the Mauri in our communities is strong and has a clear purpose.
Words of Life
Ihu (Yeshua's name in the Paipera Tapu) spoke about this connection between the spirit, the word, and the life force:

Managing Our Field
Because we are connected to everything around us, the health of our rivers and bush affects the health of our own spirits. Marsden’s training reminds us that we aren't just bystanders. We are active participants who can influence the world around us. By checking in on the Mauri of our projects and our families, we are acting as the Navigators we were meant to be. We are making sure the "breath" of the North remains pure and strong for the generations to come.
